Aging Mother Pleads For Attention From Her Distant Adult Son

  • 5 min read

An Unwelcome Presence in a Quiet Living Room

The woman smoothed the front of her knitted beige cardigan and stepped softly toward the kitchen counter. Her son gripped a white mug, eyes fixed on his smartphone while his wife adjusted her bag beside the marble island. Neither of them looked up as the elderly woman offered a quiet morning greeting.

The couple exchanged glances near the window overlooking the city skyline. A sharp whisper broke the stillness as the younger woman tapped the glass screen in her hand, complaining about the absence of space. The son set his cup down with a dull click and muttered in agreement.

When the mother approached the sofa with clasped hands and asked if she was intruding, the man stood up. His eyebrows knotted tightly together. He told her plainly that they needed room to live their own lives, stepping back toward the glass windows while she lowered her gaze to the floorboards.

A Single Match on an Unmarked Morning

Night fell, and rain streaked the wide glass panes looking out toward the illuminated towers of the city. The older woman sat alone on the edge of the mattress, running her thumb over the cracked glass of a small framed photograph showing three younger faces from decades before. Two clear drops slid down her cheek and landed on the wooden frame.

By dawn, she stood over a round wooden table, pressing a plain white pillar candle into a ceramic saucer. She drew a single wooden match against the striking strip, letting the yellow flame flare up before lowering it to the wick.

She watched the small wick burn in the quiet room, whispering the significance of the day to the empty walls. She whispered that she only hoped for a single smile before the morning ended.

Footsteps echoed across the hallway as her son walked past, staring down into the glowing screen of his phone. She stepped into his path, folding her hands tightly against her chest and asking if he remembered what date it was. Without looking up from the screen, he announced that he was far too busy to talk.

A Suitcase Left on the Concrete Steps

Before the afternoon arrived, the front door of the apartment building opened wide. The man dragged a heavy leather suitcase across the doorway, placing it firmly onto the brownstone steps outside. His mother reached out, trembling fingers clutching her cardigan as she pleaded that she had nowhere else in the city to stay.

The heavy wooden door swung shut, the brass lock clicking into place from the inside. The elderly woman gripped the worn leather handle of the luggage and began walking down the crowded avenue, her sensible shoes clicking against the pavement as hurried pedestrians brushed past her shoulders.

She stopped outside the display window of a small corner bakery, staring through the glass at rows of frosted cakes decorated with candy flowers. Pushing the door open, she stepped up to the wooden counter and asked the baker if she might have a tiny slice for her birthday. When the clerk asked for payment, she opened a worn, empty wallet, bowed her head, and stepped back out onto the sidewalk.

A New Table Set for a Family

A black sedan pulled smoothly to the curb near where she stood dabbing her eyes with a crumpled tissue. A man dressed in a dark suit jacket stepped out onto the concrete and walked directly toward her, asking what had brought on such grief. When she explained that her son had turned her out on her birthday, the stranger gestured toward his open car door.

Within the hour, he led her into an upscale boutique, pointing toward rows of tailored garments hanging along the marble walls. She ran her fingers across the fabric of a deep burgundy evening dress with folded lapels and gathered sleeves, lifting the hanger with wide, questioning eyes.

Moments later, the doors of an ornate dining hall swung open beneath crystal chandeliers. A massive three-tiered white cake sat in the center of a linen-draped table, decorated with piped rosettes and topped with golden script.

The man guided her to the edge of the table, placing a silver knife into her hands so she could slice through the soft white frosting. When she asked why an absolute stranger would prepare such a feast, the man leaned close, his voice quiet as he explained that his own mother had passed years ago, leaving his home hollow without her presence.

A woman in an emerald dress stepped into the dining room alongside two young children dressed in formal attire. The young boy looked up at the grandmotherly woman in the burgundy gown and asked if they could call her Grandma. The elderly woman dropped to her knees, wrapped both arms tightly around the two children, and buried her face into their shoulders as they clung to her neck.
