Trapped Along the Highway Shoulder
The mother cat clawed at the black plastic covering her face, rearing up on her hind legs just inches from passing car tires.
Beside her on the gravel curb, four tiny kittens pressed their bellies flat against the ground, mouths wide as they cried out.
A dark sedan sped past, rustling the weeds and shaking the plastic wrapped tightly around her skull.
She stumbled forward blindly, bumping her head against the yellow curb while her paws scraped uselessly against the slick plastic bag.
The kittens scrambled after her in a tight pack, their tails pointed straight up into the air as they nudged her flanks.
A Commuter Sprints Across the Asphalt
A man in blue jeans and a dark jacket came running across the lanes of traffic.
He dropped to both knees directly on the coarse gravel right behind the mother cat.
His hands reached out carefully, sliding under her belly and around her chest to lift her away from the edge of the road.
He carried her a few paces back toward the grassy embankment, out of reach of the passing vehicles.
Setting her back on all fours, he leaned forward and pinched the loose fold of black plastic behind her ears.
Peeling Back the Shroud
His fingers worked around the opening at her neck, stretching the tight plastic ring away from her fur.
With a slow, steady pull, he slid the bag over her whiskers, up past her forehead, and off her ears.
Her green eyes opened wide into the daylight, blinking rapidly against the midday sun.
She let out a soft cry, her head turning immediately down toward the grass where her litter was scrambling.
The four kittens tumbled into her chest, pressing their faces into her striped coat while she bowed her neck to lick them.
Moving Into the Sunlit Field
The man crouched back on his heels, watching the mother wrap her front paws around her litter in the soft grass.
Her tongue swept across the orange kitten’s forehead, smoothing down the ruffled fur between its ears.
When the man stood up and began walking along the dirt path beside the field, the mother cat rose to her feet.
The mother cat lifted her tail high, striding through the tall evening grass toward the setting sun, while the four tiny kittens trotted in a neat row right behind her.
