Stranded Owlet Faces A Ginger Cat On A Freezing Yukon Roadside

  • 2 min read

A Helpless Fledgling in the Drifts

A young owl flapped its speckled wings against the deep snowbanks, crying out as passing cars sprayed slush along the shoulder of Highway 16.

Its downy body remained sunk deep in the white powder beneath a barren roadside tree.

A large ginger cat walked steadily through the drifts, its paws pressing round indentations into the crust.

The owlet threw open its wings and opened its beak wide, hissing toward the advancing feline.

Instead of striking, the orange cat slowed its gait, lowering its head to sniff the bird’s ruffled chest feathers.

An Unexpected Lift

The cat reached forward with one front paw, testing the snow around the owlet before nudging its shoulder.

The young bird snapped its beak and spread its wings wide against the cold bank.

Lowering its chin, the cat pressed its muzzle gently into the downy nape of the owlet’s neck.

Its jaws parted wide enough to secure a firm, careful grip on the bird’s scruff without biting down.

With a clean lift of its head, the cat hoisted the fledging completely out of the snowy hollow.

The little bird dangled quietly, its feet tucked upward as the cat turned back toward the tree trunk.

Climbing toward the Canopy

Carrying the fledgling clear of the ground, the orange cat reached the rough bark of the snow-dusted tree.

It planted its front claws into the timber and leaped upward in measured bounds.

Each pull of the cat’s forelegs brought the bird higher above the passing highway traffic.

High above on a bare bough, an adult great horned owl watched from the rim of a stick nest alongside a second chick.

The cat scaled the main fork of the trunk, keeping its jaw tight around the chick’s scruff until it reached the nest level.

It hoisted itself onto the thick branch and deposited the grounded baby directly onto the nest twigs.

Together in the High Boughs

The rescued owlet immediately settled beside its sibling, tucking its wings against the rim of dry sticks.

The orange cat sat squarely on the snowy branch beside the nest, curling its tail around its paws.

The adult owl turned its golden eyes toward the cat, took two steps along the branch, and leaned down.

The owl pressed the side of its feathered face against the cat’s forehead, while the orange cat rubbed its cheek back against the owl’s brow.
