Can A Caretaker Intervene As Python Traps Turkey Beside Chicks?

  • 3 min read

A Sudden Standoff in the Dust

The thick yellow coils of an albino python tightened across the dark feathers of the turkey’s chest. Each muscle contraction pushed deeper into the bird’s torso, yet the turkey kept both feet planted firmly on the dry ground.

Below her breast feathers, seven speckled poults huddled together in the dirt. They chirped rapidly, craning their small necks upward toward their mother.

Instead of collapsing, the mother turkey thrust her broad wings outward. She fanned her mottled feathers wide, forming a living canopy above the chicks.

She lifted one thick clawed foot and stamped it against the soil, kicking up a small plume of dust. The snake shifted its heavy head near her neck, its pale scales flexing with sustained force.

Running In With the Hose

Heavy work boots crunched against the farm gravel as a woman with braided red hair sprinted across the pen. She carried the brass nozzle of a long blue garden hose clamped tightly in her gloved right hand.

She slowed her stride several paces away, lowering her center of gravity to avoid scattering the chicks. Her leather gloves gripped the brass coupling firmly as she assessed how the snake was wound around the bird’s ribs.

The turkey kept its wings extended horizontally, trembling slightly under the constrictor’s weight. The chicks darted back and forth between their mother’s legs, pecking nervously at dry bits of straw.

The caretaker raised the nozzle waist-high and aligned the metal tip with the thickest coil wrapped around the bird’s midsection. She pulled the trigger, releasing a dense, pressurized blast of cool water directly against the reptile’s scales.

Breaking the Constrictor’s Hold

The sudden cold stream struck the pale yellow hide, sending white spray flying across the dark plumage of the turkey. The snake’s tail twitched immediately upon contact with the chill.

The caretaker kept the water stream steady, sweeping the nozzle across the snake’s spine where its muscles gripped hardest. The cold shock disrupted the reptile’s tight hold.

The thickest loop loosened by several inches, sliding down the turkey’s chest. The bird gave a vigorous shake of its shoulders, rustling its wet primary feathers.

With another burst of cold water directed along its flank, the python completely unwound its body. The heavy coils dropped onto the damp earth, landing with a soft thud beside the chicks.

The snake turned its pale snout away from the spray, extending its long body across the dirt path. The woman stepped forward, sweeping the water spray directly behind its tail to encourage a steady retreat toward the orchard fence.

Safe Steps in the Orchard

The turkey dropped its wings slightly, stepping forward to position her body squarely between her chicks and the slithering snake. She tilted her head downward, emitting a low cluck that drew every poult into a tight formation behind her heels.

The yellow snake glided into the shadow of the fruit trees, disappearing through the wooden fence slats. The hiss of the water hose faded as the keeper released the brass lever.

Crouching on her heels, the woman rested the hose nozzle in the dust and looked toward the brood with a relaxed smile. Her shoulders dropped as she watched the mother turkey lead her chirping flock across the dry yard toward the safety of the coop.
