A Broom Across the Tile Floor
An elderly man dragged the bristle head of a yellow broom across the speckled classroom tile, sweeping loose dust into a black upright pan.
Students sat at their desks with open notebooks and backpacks slung over the backs of their chairs, watching him work.
He wore light grey utility scrubs and dark work shoes, moving slowly between the narrow rows of desks.
A woman in a sharp grey blazer and black high heels marched down the center aisle toward him.
Her heels clicked loudly against the floor as she stopped inches from his broom.
She planted her feet, extended an index finger toward his face, and demanded to know why he was cleaning in the middle of her class.
The Stand Between the Desks
The man paused his sweeping motion and rested both hands on the wooden broom handle.
He explained quietly that he was only finishing his assignment and would be gone in a brief moment.
The teacher crossed her arms tightly over her chest and tilted her chin upward.
She told him that the room was not his space, pointing directly toward the hallway door.
Several students glanced up from their textbooks, eyes darting back and forth between the two adults standing in the aisle.
The man did not drop his gaze or step backward toward the exit.
He told her that education belonged to everyone in the building, including the people tasked with sweeping the floorboards.
The teacher leaned forward, her jaw tightening as she instructed him not to speak back to her.
A Document Pulled from the Desk
She jabbed her arm out toward the doorway a second time, ordering him to walk out immediately.
Instead of turning toward the corridor, the man set the broom handle against the front desk.
He reached into a tan folder resting beside a student’s notebook and pulled out a single sheet of paper.
He held the document out toward the woman, telling her to read what was written before ordering him away.
The teacher looked down at the paper in his grip, her arms dropping to her sides as her shoulders lowered slightly.
The man stood upright in the middle of the aisle, resting his palms loosely by his pockets.
He stated plainly that he had founded the institution decades earlier to provide a learning space for anyone willing to study.
The room remained completely still as students looked on from their wooden chairs.
The man stood tall beside the upright dustpan, gesturing with his hand toward the open classroom floor.
