Hungry Boy Offers Baker Hand-Drawn Picture In Exchange For Pie

  • 4 min read

A Cold Morning at the Bakery Window

A small boy pressed his palms flat against the chilled exterior glass, his breath puffing into white mist that blurred the display inside.

Behind the pane sat a golden, latticed crust resting on a metal cooling rack, steam drifting upward past dried autumn leaves.

An older man wearing a dusted white apron paused his work at the wooden prep counter.

He wiped his flour-dusted hands along a folded linen towel, looking toward the small face pressed against the glass.

Raising his right arm, the baker curled his fingers inward, gesturing toward the shop doorway.

The boy pushed the heavy latch open and stepped into the room, his shoulders tucked close to his chest against the outdoor chill.

He kept both hands buried in the front pouch of his oversized hooded sweatshirt.

The Most Valuable Coin on the Counter

The boy stopped at the edge of the wooden counter, lifting his chin just enough to clear the dark trim.

He slid a folded sheet of white paper from his pocket and laid it flat across the flour-speckled boards.

On the page, crooked wax crayon lines formed a brown pie pan topped with yellow crust and floating red hearts.

The baker leaned his forearms against the counter, lowered his spectacles, and took the paper by its corners.

His fingers traced the wax lines across the center fold while the boy watched his eyes shift back and forth across the drawing.

The baker walked over to the exposed brick pillar beside the cash register and pressed a strip of tape across the top edge of the drawing.

He returned to the counter, pulled a fresh ceramic plate from the lower shelf, and cut a wide wedge from the warm lattice pie.

The boy held the metal fork in his fist, lifting a steaming bite to his mouth and blowing small breaths across the filling before chewing.

The baker rested both hands flat on his apron, watching the boy finish every crumb from the rim of the dish.

Blueprints Under the Night Lamp

Two decades later, an aged hand gripping a wooden walking cane tapped lightly along the floorboards of the shop.

The baker stood in front of the same brick pillar, looking up at the crayon drawing now preserved beneath a wooden picture frame.

Beside him stood the boy, now a tall man in a dark wool coat, carrying rolled parchment tucked under his arm.

The baker pointed the tip of his cane toward the peeling paint near the threshold and the dulling wooden window frame.

The younger man smiled softly, resting a hand briefly against the older man’s shoulder before stepping back into the evening dusk.

Later that night, the younger man sat beneath a brass desk lamp in an office overlooking city lights.

He unrolled wide drafting paper, securing each corner with metal weights beside a framed photograph of the original crayon drawing.

He drew a graphite pencil along a wooden straightedge, marking new support beams, glass framing, and carved timber signage.

His fingers smudged away stray graphite dust as the detailed lines of a renovated storefront took form beneath his hands.

The Unveiling on the Brick Corner

The following morning, a heavy crimson drape hung suspended across the bakery entrance, concealing the entire front facade.

The younger man took hold of the velvet edge and pulled it down in one continuous sweep, letting the fabric pool at his feet.

Above the freshly polished doorway sat a carved wooden signboard bearing the word “BAKERY” in clean, raised lettering beneath twin gooseneck lamps.

The older baker brought a trembling hand to his mouth, his knuckles pressed tight against his silver beard.

He pulled a white cloth from his pocket and pressed it into the corner of his eye, blinking up at the restored cedar trim.

The younger man stepped beside him, clapping a hand across his back and guiding him past the freshly painted threshold.

Inside, the two sat side by side at the polished wooden table directly underneath the framed childhood sketch.

The baker set down a freshly baked lattice pie between them, both men laughing as steam rose toward the warm ceiling lights.
