The Sharp Nip On The Trouser Leg
The orange-tipped beak clamped firmly onto the khaki fabric of the man’s trousers, shaking the cloth with deliberate persistence. The large white swan stretched its neck downward, refusing to loosen its grip as it tugged against the stride of the man walking along the dirt path. The man slowed his pace, glancing down at the feathered bird gripping his clothing while the water of the pond shimmered quietly among the tall green reeds nearby. With each step the man tried to take forward, the swan shifted its footing on the gravel and tightened its hold, wings slightly lifted and body angled forward in a posture of unwavering insistence. The man turned his shoulders slightly toward the water, murmuring a low acknowledgement as the bird finally released the cloth and stepped back onto the path.
Following The Urgent Guide
The man turned and began walking down the shaded dirt trail, his boots crunching softly against the earth while the white swan waddled closely behind him, keeping pace just a step away. Another white swan emerged from the tall shoreline reeds ahead, joining the first bird as they hurried along the water’s edge with outstretched necks and quick, clicking webbed feet. The man kept his eyes fixed on the path ahead, his arms swinging loosely at his sides while the two birds guided him directly toward a muddy embankment choked with thick green rushes. He reached the water’s edge, bending his knees to lower his frame as the swans dropped their heads toward the mud at the base of the bank. The man parted the tall reeds with his hands, peering into the dense shadows where the dark, wet shoreline met the shallow water.
Reaching Into The Mud
A small, dark cygnet lay motionless in the mud at the water’s edge, its gray downy feathers matted with dark silt and its small webbed feet resting flat against the wet earth. The man planted both knees firmly in the damp soil, leaning his weight forward as he extended his right arm down the steep earthen drop. His fingers pressed into the cool mud alongside the small bird, searching for a secure hold beneath its slick body while the two adult swans crowded close, their long necks dipping down to brush against his shoulders. He curved his palm beneath the cygnet’s chest and belly, his knuckles smearing with dark mud as he lifted the tiny bird upward from the muck. The cygnet’s head drooped slightly as it was brought clear of the water’s edge, its damp wings pressed close against its sides while the man pulled his arms back toward his chest to steady his grip.
Returning To The Water’s Edge
The man straightened his legs, standing upright on the grassy bank while cradling the wet cygnet in both hands, wiping stray mud from its back with his fingertips. He stepped away from the steep drop, lowering his hands toward the patch of green grass near the water where the two adult swans stood waiting with expectant postures. The cygnet touched its feet to the turf, its small legs wobbling slightly before finding balance on the green blades beneath the open sunlight. The two adult birds immediately turned toward the little cygnet, lowering their long white necks and stepping forward to herd the small bird back toward the shelter of the pond. The man stood with his arms crossed over his chest, watching as the family waddled together down the green slope toward the rippling water’s edge.
