Rain on the Mat
Water dripped from the ragged edge of a torn clog as the elderly man stepped onto the entrance rug.
He folded his arms tightly across his dark blazer, his fingers trembling against the damp fabric. Outside, rain fell heavily against the glass doors of the public library.
A librarian wearing a green cardigan and name badge approached him from across the brightly lit lobby. She paused, offered a warm smile, and looked down at his exposed toe resting on the wet rubber matting.
He cleared his throat softly and asked if he could wait quietly out of the way. She nodded immediately, pointing to a sheltered spot along the interior entryway.
A Warm Cup
Moments later, the young woman returned carrying a steaming white paper cup with a protective sleeve.
The elderly man looked at the cup, his shoulders tightening as he asked if payment was required. She shook her head, extending both hands to transfer the warm drink into his grasp.
He brought the rim to his mouth, closed his eyes, and exhaled as the steam drifted across his wire-rimmed spectacles. He whispered that the warmth made an otherwise brutal night easier to endure.
Heavy footsteps broke the quiet as a uniformed security officer marched rapidly toward them across the polished tile floor. The officer planted his boots firmly, barking that the facility was not a daytime shelter and demanding the visitor leave at once.
The young librarian shifted her stance, placing herself directly between the officer and the elderly man. She explained calmly that the visitor was only seeking dry shelter from the torrential downpour.
The officer stepped forward, pointing his index finger and warning her that he would contact administration to have her employment terminated. Unwilling to see her face consequences on his behalf, the elderly man set his cup down, pulled his damp coat around himself, and walked out down the granite exterior steps.
An Unexpected Reunion
The young woman grabbed a black umbrella from behind the desk and rushed outside into the pouring rain. She held the canopy high above his head, insisting that he take it with him into the storm.
As they stood huddled on the wet sidewalk waiting for an intake van, a man in a tailored dark trench coat approached the staircase. The newcomer stopped mid-stride, squinting through the falling rain at the elderly man’s face.
He recalled a university classroom from forty years prior, naming a specific course and referencing a blue examination book. The older man looked up, his jaw slackening as he recognized his former student, Robert.
Robert stepped closer under the edge of the rain, revealing that he now served as the head director of the library system. When the young librarian explained how the security guard had ejected the man and issued threats, Robert turned to face the officer standing under the entryway awning.
Without raising his voice, the director relieved the guard of duty and took his identification badge directly from his hand. He turned back to his old professor, offering immediate dry shoes and a meal inside the building.
The Director’s Desk
A white passenger van pulled up along the rain-slicked curb before the offer could be accepted. The retired educator returned the black umbrella to the young woman, stepped inside the sliding side door, and watched the vehicle merge into evening traffic.
Back inside the quiet administrative office, the director picked up a set of policy folders from his desk. He looked across the room at the young staff member, assuring her that her position was safe and that morning staff meetings would address how every visitor is welcomed through their doors.
He turned slightly toward the doorway, holding the papers against his chest as the rain continued tapping against the dark windowpane.
