Chaos at the Banquet Table
Two bare hands shoved an entire roast chicken into a faded canvas tote bag. The girl wearing a frayed green knit sweater and torn jeans glanced quickly across the grand ballroom. Crystal chandeliers cast golden light across rows of guests dressed in black-tie tuxedos and floor-length evening dresses.
She tucked the cloth opening shut, but her movement caught the eye of an older woman wearing an embellished dark gown and a sparkling tiara. The woman lunged forward with a sharp shout, grabbing the canvas strap with both hands. “Thief! Give me that bag right now!”
A struggle followed beside the banquet display. The older woman yanked the strap backward, throwing the girl off balance. The girl’s boots slid across the polished parquet floor, sending her body crashing against the side of the buffet table. Pastries tumbled, plates clattered, and she fell hard onto the floor beside the scattered tablecloth.
An Unexpected Hand
Dozens of partygoers stepped back, murmuring among themselves as the girl sat on the wooden floor, curling her knees close. The woman stood over her with the confiscated tote bag gripped tightly in her fist.
Footsteps echoed across the ballroom as a tall man in a tailored black suit moved past the circle of guests. He bypassed the shouting woman and dropped down to one knee directly in front of the girl. He reached out, placing his fingers beneath her forearm to steady her frame.
With a firm grip, he helped pull her up onto her feet until she was standing upright. He reached down, took the canvas bag, and placed the straps back into her trembling hands. Looking directly into her eyes, he asked if she was all right. The girl pulled the bag tight against her ribcage, shook her head, and whispered that she needed to leave.
A Long Walk Through the Night
She turned and hurried past the banquet tables toward the exit doors. Outside, the bright lights of the ballroom disappeared into the dim, empty city streets. The damp pavement reflected the orange glow of solitary overhead streetlamps.
She kept her head down, her boots tapping against the cracked sidewalk as she moved past closed metal security shutters and darkened storefronts. Both of her arms remained wrapped around the canvas tote, keeping the warm food pressed against her sweater. She walked past alleyways and deserted corners, her breath showing in the night air.
At the end of a narrow street, she pushed open a weathered wooden door. Inside, a narrow hallway led toward a dim, peeling bedroom where an elderly man lay beneath a faded patchwork quilt. A harsh cough broke from his chest. She dropped the bag to the floorboards and ran straight to the side of the metal bedframe, gripping his hand to check his forehead.
A Shared Meal
She pulled a small wooden bed tray across his lap. Taking the warm roast chicken from the bag, she carved pieces onto a plate and poured a glass of water beside it.
The elderly man pushed himself upright against his pillows. He reached down with trembling, weathered fingers and picked up a chicken drumstick. He brought the food to his mouth and took a bite, chewing slowly as his shoulders began to relax against the headboard.
The girl sat on the edge of the mattress beside him, watching his hand move back and forth to the plate. Her eyes softened, and a wide grin spread across her cheeks as the old man took another large bite and nodded toward her from the bed.
