An Unexpected Guide on the Gravel
Black sneakers crunched against the light gray gravel as the woman walked between long rows of potted rose bushes.
A spiky brown shape darted out from beneath the dark green foliage on the left, scurrying straight toward the hem of her dark jeans.
She stopped mid-stride, pulling her foot back as the small hedgehog turned its snout upward and circled her toes.
The animal spun around, took four quick strides down the path, and stopped to look back over its shoulder.
She took a step forward, watching the small animal immediately quicken its pace to stay just a few feet ahead.
Each time she slowed her pace, the hedgehog paused on the stones, shifting its weight from side to side until her footsteps resumed.
Following the Path of Potted Roses
The gravel crunch matched the rustle of dry rose leaves as they moved farther down the nursery corridor.
Vibrant pink blooms hung from the black nursery containers on the left, casting narrow shadows across the pathway in the morning sun.
The hedgehog stayed near the edge of the grass strip bordering the pots, its small legs moving rapidly across the rough stones.
It paused near a stack of containers, glanced back once more toward the woman, and nudged its snout toward a gap between the pots.
The woman crouched down beside the row, shifting a metal watering can to the side to get a clearer view of the ground.
An overturned terracotta pot rested upside down against the moist earth, jammed tightly between two larger plastic planters.
The little hedgehog stood on the grass directly in front of the clay pot, tapping its front paws against the rim.
Lifting the Heavy Clay
She extended both hands, sliding her fingertips beneath the thick clay lip of the overturned planter.
The pot was wedged firmly into the dirt, surrounded by green blades of grass and loose mulch.
She tightened her grip on the rough reddish surface and lifted the container upward at an angle.
Inside the dark hollow beneath the clay, another round, quill-covered body shifted against the damp soil.
A larger hedgehog uncurled slightly, blinking toward the daylight as the heavy shadow moved away.
The trapped animal crawled forward across the crushed stems, pulling its rear legs out from the depression in the ground.
Reunion on the Garden Stones
The newly freed hedgehog stepped onto the patch of green grass right beside the upturned planter.
The smaller hedgehog rushed forward immediately, pressing its black nose directly against the larger one’s face.
The woman drew her hands back into her lap and leaned back onto her heels, watching the two animals stand side by side.
Both sets of quills flattened slightly as they touched snouts, snuffling quietly against each other in the shade of the rose leaves.
They turned together toward the base of the bushes, moving side by side through the grass and disappearing into the undergrowth.
