An Unwelcome Visitor
An older man pushed open the heavy glass doors of the luxury auto showroom, his worn work boots squeaking against polished white tiles. Frayed threads hung from the rips in his faded denim jacket and jeans as he stepped past rows of gleaming sports cars.
A salesman in a tailored black suit marched forward from a glass-walled office, planting his hands firmly on his hips. He looked the older visitor up and down, curling his lip before asking what business someone looking like that had on the sales floor.
The visitor pointed toward a sports car parked near the center aisle. He stated quietly that he only wanted to inspect the vehicle.
Laughter on the Showroom Floor
The salesman folded his arms tightly across his chest and let out a sharp laugh. He gestured toward the glass exit doors, telling the visitor that he could never afford a single vehicle in the building.
He demanded that the visitor stop wasting his shift and exit the premises immediately. His voice echoed off the concrete pillars, drawing stares from across the room.
The older man held his position without shifting his weight. He looked directly at the salesman and stated that clothing should never dictate how a person is treated.
The salesman stepped closer, his jaw tight as he repeated that people dressed in rags did not belong on the floor. He crossed his arms again, waiting for the older man to turn around and leave.
The Call That Changed Everything
Instead of turning back toward the entrance, the older man reached deep into his denim pocket. He pulled out a black smartphone, tapped the screen twice, and held it up to his ear.
He spoke firmly into the receiver, telling the person on the other end to come out to the showroom floor right away. Then he lowered the device and waited quietly by the front desk.
The salesman laughed again, shaking his head. He asked who could possibly be on the phone and questioned why the man was still standing inside.
Footsteps echoed sharply from the executive hallway at the back of the building. Another man dressed in a dark blue suit emerged, walking at a brisk pace toward the entrance.
The True Owner
The suited executive stopped directly in front of the older man in the torn jacket. He extended his right hand, dipped his head forward in a low bow, and gripped the older man’s palm with both hands.
The executive welcomed the older man back, stating aloud that management had been preparing for his scheduled arrival. The salesman stood frozen, his arms falling slack at his sides as his mouth fell open.
The salesman stuttered, asking his colleague how he knew the man in torn clothes. The visitor turned toward the salesman, pointing an index finger straight ahead.
He announced that he was the owner of the dealership and had arrived unannounced to inspect staff conduct. The salesman lowered his chin, swallowing hard as the owner stood motionless before him, waiting for an explanation.
