An ID Card Under Roadside Scrutiny
Thick thumbs bent the laminated identification card, turning the blue and green plastic back and forth against the harsh daylight. The deputy tilted the edge to catch the holographic seal before glancing up from the hood of the black patrol cruiser.
Standing beside the driver side door, the woman in the tan service jacket shifted her stance. Her fingers pressed flat against her utility belt as her eyebrows drew together.
“Please stop,” she said, her voice dropping an octave as she locked her focus onto the deputy’s hands. Her chest rose and fell sharply while she waited for the card to be returned.
The deputy did not slide the card back across the hood. Instead, he pulled his shoulders back and laid his palm flat over the edge of the driver door window frame.
“I need to verify this,” the deputy said, shaking his head slightly while squinting down the empty asphalt lane.
The woman took a half-step forward, placing her boot against the road shoulder gravel. “Please call a supervisor.”
Calling In The Sheriff Supervisor
The deputy turned and raised his right hand toward the cruiser parked directly behind them. He waved his arm in an open inward sweep, motioning his partner to step out into the road.
A second deputy, older with graying hair along his temples, pushed his door open and walked up to the driver side. His belt gear clattered faintly with every step as he approached the front quarter panel.
The first deputy handed over the plastic credential without looking away from the driver. The older officer took the card by its corner, holding it inches from his face while squinting at the small printed text.
“I’m not sure this is valid,” the senior deputy muttered, rubbing his chin with his free thumb. “We should confirm it.”
The woman stepped back toward the cruiser’s rear panel. She pulled a handheld radio and cell phone from her jacket, dialing rapidly with her thumb while keeping her back turned to the patrol car.
She lifted the receiver tight against her cheek. “Sir, I think you should see this yourself,” she said, her breath fogging slightly against the screen before she ended the call.
The Command Room Confrontation
Inside the district substation office, the older deputy leaned against the edge of a round laminate conference table. Window blinds cut the harsh outside sun into narrow bands of gray across his badge.
The female officer sat upright in an armless chair opposite him, hands folded firmly across her knees. Her gaze remained fixed on the closed hallway door across the room.
The exterior latch clicked, and the heavy metal door swung outward into the daylight corridor. Both deputies shifted their weight toward the entrance as boot leather struck the linoleum floor.
A military commander walked through the open doorway wearing a full dark-green dress uniform. Rows of ribbon bars and combat medals sat across his left breast, topped by crisp rank insignia along the shoulder boards.
He stopped directly in the center of the doorway, his chin lifted and hands resting squarely at his sides. The deputies remained seated around the table as the door slowly swung shut behind him.
