A Routine Check By The Curb
Officer Nolan stepped toward the sleek sports car parked outside the building entrance. He kept his shoulders squared and his radio mic adjusted firmly against his chest.
His partner walked in tandem, his eyes scanning the windows and the open driveway. They stopped alongside the driver door where a woman in a dark blazer stood quietly.
Nolan shook his head lightly and pointed toward the vehicle. He stated that the paperwork on file did not match the vehicle currently sitting in the lane.
The Document Handed Over
The woman raised her right hand and extended a folded sheet of paper toward the two patrolmen. Her wrist remained completely level as she held the document forward.
She told the officers to read the printed owner information directly off the paper. Her chin lifted slightly while she waited for them to take it.
The junior officer reached out, pinched the top edge of the slip, and brought it close to his chest. He lowered his gaze to scan the black ink lines printed across the form.
His eyes widened noticeably. His eyebrows climbed as he reread the primary name listed on the registration block.
A Sudden Shift In Focus
The woman told him to repeat what he had said just moments prior. She kept her hands clasped lightly in front of her jacket.
Nolan leaned over his partner’s shoulder to examine the tiny lettering. He squinted at the state seal and the registered address stamped across the document.
His lips pressed into a tight line as the details sank in. The confident posture he held when walking up began to alter.
Behind them, footsteps sounded against the concrete driveway. A man with white hair wearing a dark trench coat walked toward the rear bumper of the vehicle.
The Realization Hits
Nolan shifted his weight from his left boot to his right boot, hearing the movement behind him. He started turning his torso before his boots fully adjusted on the pavement.
His gaze drifted past the car’s silver spoiler and locked directly onto the walking figure. The officer’s mouth opened slightly while the folded paper remained gripped in his partner’s hand.
A quiet utterance slipped out as he pieced together whose name rested on the registration sheet. His eyebrows furrowed with sudden concern.
Officer Nolan turns his head back toward the approaching man in the dark coat as his partner glances down at the folded paper.
