The Standoff at the Threshold
The heavy plastic wheels of a rolling suitcase scraped across the wooden deck boards of the front porch. A young woman gripped the telescoping handle, her knuckles white as she leaned forward.
An older woman stood firmly in the doorway wrapped in a beige bathrobe. She kept her arms pressed against her sides and her chin raised toward the visitors.
The visitor declared that they were staying. The woman in the robe shook her head, offering a quiet, absolute refusal.
The porch emptied, but the blue suitcase remained behind. It stood upright against the railing as twilight faded into darkness.
A Call in the Dark
Night set in, casting the porch in deep blue shadows. Inside, the landline telephone on the wall let out a sharp ring.
The woman lifted the receiver and pressed it against her ear. Her eyebrows knit together as a male voice spoke from the other end of the line.
The caller gave a direct instruction regarding the luggage left on the porch. He told her there was a folder inside, and commanded her not to open it.
She lowered the receiver slowly back onto its cradle. Her gaze shifted toward the front door.
Unzipping the Hidden Ledger
The woman stepped outside into the darkness and dragged the heavy bag across the threshold. She lifted the suitcase with both hands and set it flat onto the kitchen island.
Her fingers caught the metal zipper pulls, separating the teeth around the main compartment. She folded the heavy canvas lid back against the counter.
She pushed past a layer of denim jackets and casual clothes. Beneath the fabric, her fingertips brushed against smooth paper.
She withdrew a thick stack of printed sheets. A clear color photograph of a red brick two-story house sat centered on the page.
The Signature on the Dotted Line
The woman lowered the papers flat against the counter. Her eyes moved across the typed columns of numbers and legal clauses.
Her property was listed clearly on the page as collateral for a massive sum. Her breathing slowed as she turned to the final sheet.
Across the bottom of the form ran a fresh stroke of dark ink. Beneath the line sat the typed name of the authorized representative: Brook Palmer.
The paperwork showed it had been submitted eleven days earlier. The woman’s eyelids pulled wide as she stared down at the name she recognized instantly.
The camera drifts away from the brightly lit counter, focusing down a long, pitch-black hallway where a thin sliver of light cuts across the floorboards from beneath a closed door.
