Elderly Man Asks For Help Before Security Guard Forces Him Out

  • 3 min read

A Blocked Entrance

The security guard pressed his palm flat against the older man’s worn brown jacket, nudging him back toward the sliding glass doors. His uniform stood out sharply against the polished marble floor of the hotel entrance.

“You can’t come in looking like that,” the guard said, pointing a finger toward the street outside. “The exit is behind you.”

The older man held a brown paper bag close to his ribs. A pale takeout container peeked out from the folded paper top.

“I’m here to see my son,” the older man said, his voice quiet against the lobby’s distant murmur. “Please ask reception to call him.”

The guard shook his head and closed the distance between them. “I’m not calling anyone. Stop begging in my lobby.”

The Fall Of The Paper Bag

The guard reached out and gripped the top fold of the paper parcel. With a quick twist of his wrists, he knocked the bag straight out of the older man’s hands.

The bag hit the floor tiles with a dull thud, resting upright beside the reception desk divider. Inside, the container shifted but stayed closed.

“I told you to leave,” the guard said, stepping forward again. “Don’t make me drag you.”

He gripped the man’s arm firmly, attempting to pivot him back toward the street. The older man jerked his shoulder free and regained his balance on the slick floor.

“I can walk,” the older man said, locking eyes with him. “Take your hands off me.”

A Suit In The Corridor

Heavy leather shoes clicked rapidly across the polished lobby floor. A man wearing a tailored grey suit and a dark tie cut through the walkway between the columns.

“Step away from him,” the suited man ordered, his jaw set tight as he moved directly between the two men. “You had no right to shove him.”

The guard stepped back half an inch, lowering his hands to his duty belt. His shoulders stiffened as he looked at the newcomer.

“That’s my father,” the suited man said, pointing down at the paper bag resting on the tiles. “Return his bag, apologize, and give me your badge. You’re fired.”

The guard looked between the older man’s scuffed boots and the executive standing in front of him. Neither man moved.

Returning The Badge

The guard bent his knees and reached down to the floor. His fingers took hold of the crinkled top of the brown paper sack, lifting it carefully off the marble.

He extended both hands, offering the package back to the older man. The father took the bag by its base, tucking it securely against his chest once again.

“I’m sorry I pushed you, sir,” the guard muttered, keeping his eyes lowered toward the floor. He reached up to his left chest pocket, unclasped the silver security pin, and placed the metal shield directly into the younger man’s open palm.

The older man looked up from beneath his grey hair, holding the warm takeout meal against his coat. “You heard my son and called me sir. I asked politely before you knew.”
