A Final Delivery
An elderly man knelt on the living room rug, securing a brown leather satchel around the golden retriever’s neck.
His fingers worked through the worn buckle, pulling the strap snug against the dog’s golden fur.
He opened the leather flap and slid a folded cream envelope deep into the pocket.
Cupping the retriever’s muzzle with both hands, the man leaned close.
“Buddy, deliver this letter,” he whispered into the dog’s ear.
The dog looked back, ears lifted and dark eyes fixed on the man’s face.
The man pushed himself up from the floor and walked toward the front entrance.
He pulled the wooden door open and pointed toward the sunlit street outside.
Walking The Neighborhood
Buddy stepped past the front porch and moved down the front steps onto the concrete sidewalk.
The leather pouch swayed gently against his chest with each deliberate step.
He walked past trimmed lawns, parked sedans, and quiet driveways under the morning sun.
He turned a familiar corner, keeping his head forward and his pace steady along the pavement.
A few blocks down, he veered onto a paved walkway leading toward a house with a blue front door.
Buddy climbed the two concrete porch steps and planted himself squarely in front of the doorframe.
He sat upright, tail brushing against the welcome mat as he waited in the doorway.
An Unopened Note
Inside the house, footsteps sounded through the foyer, and the glass door swung open.
A silver-haired woman smiled as she looked down at the waiting retriever.
“Well hello there, Buddy,” she said, reaching down to greet him.
Her fingers felt the stiff leather pouch hanging under his blue collar.
She lifted the top flap, pulled out the folded envelope, and turned it over in her hands.
Her eyes scanned the handwritten name on the front of the paper.
Her mouth fell open and her shoulders dropped.
Tears welled along her eyelids as she pressed the unfolded paper tightly against her chest.
She hurried past the front porch, opened the driver’s side door of her car, and started the engine.
Beside The Bed
Down a tiled hospital corridor, the woman pushed open a heavy wooden door with Buddy trotting beside her legs.
In the center of the quiet room, the elderly man lay propped up in a hospital bed beneath white sheets.
Monitors hummed softly beside him, tracking his heartbeat on a glowing green display.
When the door opened, his eyes lifted and his head turned slowly across the pillow.
She crossed the room to the bed’s edge and gathered both of his weathered hands inside hers.
“I should have come sooner,” she whispered, her chin trembling as tears rolled down her cheeks.
The man smiled faintly, his fingers tightening against her grip in the quiet room.
He dropped his other hand to rest gently on Buddy’s head, smoothing the golden fur while the retriever sat upright beside the hospital mattress.
