The Unwanted Touch
A man’s thick fingers reached behind her collar, gripping the neat bun of her hair and pulling it back just enough to tilt her chin upward.
She did not step back or pull away from his grip. Instead, her eyes fixed directly on his face, her jaw tightening as she parted her lips to speak.
“You are crossing the line, sir,” she said, her voice remaining low and level.
The man curled the corner of his mouth into a tight smirk, shifting his weight forward to crowd her personal space. Beads of sweat glistened across his forehead and down the ridge of his nose.
He leaned closer until his breath hit the side of her cheek. “You don’t belong here,” he muttered through clenched teeth.
Her eyelids barely fluttered. She kept her gaze locked onto his pupils, refusing to break contact or acknowledge the force of his hand.
Eyes Across The Mess Hall
He finally released her hair, letting the strands settle against her nape, and smoothed the front of his khaki uniform with both palms.
Across the wide dining room, rows of service members sat over plastic trays filled with lunch rations. Spoons and forks stopped midway between plates and mouths.
A young officer seated near the aisle turned his head, whispering something to the person beside him with an amused grin. Several others shifted on their metal stools, watching the two figures standing by the tall glass windows.
The woman straightened the lapels of her shirt. She kept her posture fully upright, her hands pressed flat against her trouser seams without twitching.
The man adjusted his wristwatch, running a thumb over the strap as if preparing to deliver another remark. Then, the double glass doors at the far end of the corridor swung wide open.
The Hall Snaps To Order
Heavy boot heels struck the polished floor in rhythmic, synchronized steps. Three senior officers in dark green service dress stepped through the threshold.
The officer leading the trio carried four silver stars across each shoulder board, his chest covered in rows of campaign ribbons and combat badges.
Trays clattered against plastic tables as dozens of service members pushed back their seats and snapped to full attention. Chairs scraped in unison, followed by complete quiet.
The four-star general did not glance toward the tables or acknowledge the personnel standing rigid on either side of the aisle. His gaze drove straight down the center line of the room toward the window.
The man in khakis turned his head toward the entrance. His smirk vanished, his lips parting as his eyes widened and darted between the incoming officers.
A Command In One Word
Color drained from the man’s cheeks as he shrank back half a step, his shoulders dropping out of alignment.
The general marched directly toward the pair, coming to an abrupt halt just two paces away from the woman.
Raising his right arm in a deliberate arc, the general brought his fingertips crisply to the brim of his brow, holding a rigid salute.
Beside him, the man in khakis stared in open disbelief, his jaw hanging loose as he watched the senior officer render honors.
The woman lifted her right hand, returning the salute with exact precision, her fingers straight along her eyebrow.
“Major,” the general said, his hand remaining locked at his brow while the man in khakis stood pale and motionless beside them.
