Trainee Faces A Confident Combat Instructor On The Training Mat

  • 3 min read

A Challenge on the Mat

The soldier raised his fists and leaned across the black training mat, stepping squarely into her space.

His jaw jutted forward as he grinned down at her, shoulders squared to display his size. A circle of troops in olive uniforms ringed the floor, elbows folded against chests as they watched the exchange.

She kept both hands resting loosely against her sides, chin level and shoulders squared. Her eyes never drifted from the center of his chest.

He gestured with open palms, tilting his head with a mocking half-smile. He pointed out what he thought was an opening, telling her she consistently dropped her guard on the left.

Her posture remained balanced, feet planted firm into the rubber surface.

She offered no defensive excuses or verbal sparring. She simply told him to try and stop her.

The Strike and the Fall

He pushed off his back boot, driving forward with a quick combination aimed straight toward her centerline.

Before his knuckles could clear the gap, her right forearm snapped upward into his wrist. Her hip rotated in a tight, fluid pivot that redirected his momentum across the canvas.

Her boot caught the back of his heel with precise timing. His center of gravity dissolved beneath him.

His back struck the mat with a sharp thud that echoed against the concrete ceiling of the hangar. Dust settled on the rubber padding where he lay flat.

He blinked at the overhead fluorescent lights, chest heaving as the air rushed out of his lungs. Around the ring, soldiers exchanged glances, several lips curling into suppressed smiles.

One recruit leaned toward his neighbor, whispering that the strike was too fast for his eyes to track.

Uncovering the Ghost

The downed man rolled onto his stomach, pushing himself upright with deliberate slowness. He brushed off his trousers, clearing his throat to mask the impact.

He claimed luck was the only reason he was on the ground. She corrected him quietly, noting he had made the same remark earlier.

He insisted that they had never crossed paths before, searching her features for familiarity. She replied that while they had not fought, his former instructor certainly had.

A heavy metallic click cut off their conversation as the reinforced door at the back of the gym swung open. An officer wearing camouflage and collar stars walked through the threshold.

The entire formation stiffened, every soldier locking their heels together. The commander did not look at the fallen instructor or the ranks of standing men.

His gaze remained fixed entirely on the woman standing at the edge of the mat. He spoke two words that caused the men nearby to murmur in confusion: Viper Six.

When the confused instructor asked what the name meant, the officer explained it belonged to a legend who supposedly perished eight years in the past.

The commander stood motionless in the open doorway, his blue eyes locked onto her profile as she slowly turned her head to meet his stare.
