A Reach Across The Bin
A withered hand lifted a slice of mold-crusted bread toward dry, parted lips. The bread had just been pulled from the bottom of an iron park trash bin, crumbs dusting the woman’s ragged brown sweater.
Before the bread reached her mouth, a pale hand in a tailored white sleeve reached in and caught her wrist. The younger woman leaned forward, her voice low as she spoke directly into the stranger’s face. She gently pulled the moldy food away, transferring it to her own fingers, and extended an open palm.
The older woman stared at the empty palm before lowering her trembling fingers into it. Their hands closed together against the autumn chill.
Guiding Steps Down The Avenue
They stepped onto the wide concrete sidewalk together, moving along the edge of the busy avenue. The younger woman tucked the stranger’s arm securely inside her own elbow, adjusting her stride to match the slower, shuffling pace.
Pedestrians in sharp coats rushed past them, casting quick glances at the torn hem dragging against the pavement. The woman in the white blazer never loosened her hold, steering them toward a set of polished brass doors.
The glass entrance opened into a quiet room lined with warm marble and soft lighting. An attendant in a clean beige uniform stepped forward, greeting them at the threshold without stepping back or glancing down.
Washing Away The Dust
The older woman rested back into the contoured black leather of a shampoo chair. Warm water ran through her grey, tangled hair as lather rose beneath the attendant’s fingers.
The younger woman sat right beside the basin, resting one hand against the armrest near the woman’s shoulder. With her eyes shut tight, the older woman let her head sink into the neck rest, the lines on her forehead smoothing out as the foam was rinsed clean into the drain.
Moments later, the heavy brown cardigan was gone. In its place hung a powder-blue knit dress and a soft cream cardigan.
The older woman stood in front of a full-length dressing mirror, her fingers rising to touch the pearl buttons at her collar. Her eyes widened as she took in her reflection, her mouth opening slightly while the younger woman watched from two steps behind with folded hands.
A Table Above The City
High above the street, the noise of the city fell away behind tall sheets of glass. Out the window, the Empire State Building stood sharply against a clear sky, surrounded by rows of rooftops stretching toward the horizon.
A white linen tablecloth held two tall water glasses and a plate filled with roasted chicken, tender carrots, and golden potatoes. The older woman held a fork in one hand, looking down at the warm steam rising from the plate.
The younger woman reached across the table, covering the older woman’s knuckles with both of hers. The older woman turned her chin up, meeting her gaze, and their fingers remained linked above the white cloth.
