An Unwelcome Return
She gripped the handle of her ceramic mug and walked past the hallway doorway with a brown duffel bag slung across her shoulder.
Around the central dining table, plates clinked against silverware as a crowded gathering shared food and drinks. An older woman reclined in a rocking chair by the corner, balancing a plastic cup on her knee while watching the doorway.
Beside the counter, a younger woman carrying a loaded dinner plate paused mid-stride. Her eyes shifted toward the newcomer, her steps slowing as the room fell quiet.
The woman in the baseball cap adjusted her bag strap against her collarbone. She did not raise her voice or drop her gaze.
A Line Drawn Indoors
A man in a pale green crewneck stepped directly into her path, his lips pulling into an amused grin. He tilted his head slightly, leaning closer to block the threshold.
“What is this freeloader doing here?” he asked, resting his hands near his pockets. “Get out.”
She kept her grip firm around the mug, tucking her bag closer against her ribs. “Ryan,” she answered plainly.
The woman holding the plate spoke up from across the room, her voice carrying over the idle murmur of the dining table. “I honestly didn’t think you’d come home.”
Ryan crossed his arms over his chest, his shoulders broadening as he planted his boots against the linoleum. “There are almost twenty of us and one of you,” he told her. “Just leave.”
Standing Her Ground
The woman in the cap tilted her chin upward to meet his eyes. “Just so we’re clear, you’re ordering me off my own property?”
“Exactly,” Ryan answered without blinking, his arms remaining folded tight against his chest.
She gave a brief nod, her eyes scanning the faces behind him around the kitchen table. Nobody moved to intervene. A pair of running shoes sat undisturbed near an ice cooler on the floor beside the rocking chair.
“All right,” she said softly, turning her back on the crowded room. She shifted her shoulder bag and walked out through the doorway, her sneakers carrying her down the wooden steps toward the gravel drive.
A Look Across The Porch
Outside, the afternoon breeze stirred the dust across the driveway where her dark truck stood parked. She pulled a smartphone from her pocket, her thumb grazing the glass display as she stopped beside the vehicle’s side panel.
Up on the raised deck, Ryan stepped forward to the railing, gripping the wooden banister beside a draped striped blanket. He leaned forward slightly, watching her from the porch elevation.
She raised her head, turning slowly away from the truck door. Her fingers wrapped around the phone as she stared directly back at the man watching her from the porch railing.
