The Chair Pulled From The Table
The young man wrapped both hands around the dark carved wood and pulled the high-backed chair away from the dining table.
He carried the heavy antique into the hallway, smiling as he declared that it was finally time for an upgrade.
Beside the table, an older man stood leaning heavily on a wooden cane. His knuckles pressed hard against the curved handle.
He raised an open hand toward the empty space where the seat had been. His voice cracked as he pointed out that the piece had belonged to his grandfather.
The son disappeared into the adjacent room, paying little attention to the plea. A moment later, he walked back carrying a bulky, emerald-green tufted velvet armchair.
He dropped the modern cushion onto the floorboards with a dull thud, sliding it directly into the head of the polished wooden table.
Tears At The Head Of The Table
The father stood motionless in his cardigan, his breathing shallow. Two tears welled in the corners of his eyes and traced down the deep creases of his cheeks.
His chin began to quiver. He stared down at the garish green fabric replacing the centuries-old woodwork that held his family history.
The young man rested his palms casually on the green backrest, looking pleased with the new addition.
The older man turned away from the table. He did not yell, and he did not push the new chair away.
Instead, he reached for a dark green presentation folder resting nearby. He brought it directly to the table and flipped the cover open.
Inside lay a legal document pressed flat against the backing, marked at the bottom by an embossed gold seal.
The Document On The Table
The father extended a weathered index finger and planted it firmly against the gold emblem on the page.
A young woman standing across the room stepped closer to see what lay inside the binding.
Her jaw dropped open in a sharp intake of air as she read the lines beneath his finger. Her eyes widened, shifting rapidly between the paper and the older man’s face.
The father looked up from the table. His jaw locked tight, and his gaze fixed squarely on his son.
He spoke with absolute clarity, stating that the house was his own and that respect was non-negotiable under his roof.
The young man stepped away from the velvet backrest. He turned back toward the dark hallway where he had dumped the original furniture.
Restoring The Family Seat
Bending his knees, the son grabbed the tall, spiraled wooden posts of the antique chair. He hoisted the heavy frame into his arms once again.
He shuffled backward through the doorway, carrying the carved seat step by step across the hardwood flooring.
The father stayed where he was, one hand planted on his cane and the other resting on the table.
The father and the young woman stood beside the polished wood, watching the green chair sit vacant beneath the amber glow of the ceiling fixture.
