Officer Spots A Barking Dog Standing Over An Unconscious Driver

  • 3 min read

Paws On The Driver’s Chest

The golden retriever planted both front paws onto the plaid shirt of the man lying flat across the gravel shoulder.

With every passing vehicle, the dog threw his muzzle toward the sky and let out sharp, rhythmic barks.

His owner lay completely motionless beside an open silver station wagon, one arm outstretched on the stones.

A tan baseball cap rested inches from the older man’s shoulder where it had fallen.

The dog shifted his weight, pressing his front pads down firmly against the man’s chest between each howl.

He turned his head toward the traffic, watching the road with alert, focused eyes as cars sped by without slowing.

An Officer Pulls Over

A patrol cruiser angled into the dust behind the parked car with its emergency flashers activated.

The officer unlatched his driver-side door, stepped out into the gravel, and moved swiftly toward the figure on the ground.

Instead of growling or backing away, the retriever stepped down and sat directly beside his owner’s head.

The officer dropped to one knee, resting two fingers against the side of the man’s neck to check for a pulse.

With his other hand, he keyed the radio on his shoulder collar.

“Dispatch, I need an ambulance,” the officer spoke into the mic. “Elderly male is unconscious.”

The retriever rested a paw on the officer’s boot, keeping his eyes on the man’s unmoving face.

Within minutes, sirens sounded along the ridge as an ambulance pulled up along the dusty roadside.

Loading The Stretcher

Two paramedics stepped out of the back doors and wheeled a yellow gurney through the roadside stones.

They placed straps across the man’s legs and torso, gently shifting him onto the board.

The officer secured a blue leash onto the retriever’s collar, guiding him a few steps back to give the medical crew room.

The retriever walked alongside the gurney, sniffing the edge of the blanket as paramedics lifted it into the vehicle.

Once the back doors slammed shut, the officer loaded the dog into the patrol car to follow behind.

At the hospital, rubber soles squeaked against the polished tile of the intensive care hallway.

The officer knelt beside a set of sliding glass doors, keeping the leash loose in his fingers.

Inside the room, the older man rested in a hospital bed with wires and monitors running to his arm.

The dog placed both front paws against the glass panel, tail wagging in rapid sweeps against the floor.

Through the window, the man turned his head, saw the dog, and his mouth formed a gentle smile.

Back In The Front Yard

The dog pushed through the open hospital door and pressed his chest against the edge of the mattress.

The man wrapped both arms around the thick fur of the dog’s neck, pulling him close against his hospital gown.

Days later, the silver station wagon sat parked safely inside a quiet neighborhood driveway.

The man stood tall on the stone walkway by a white picket fence, holding a small red rubber ball in his right hand.

He flicked his wrist, sending the red ball bouncing across the bright green grass of the lawn.

The retriever sprang forward into the yard, kicking up dust as he sprinted after the bouncing red sphere.
