A Delicate Crossing In Front Of Waiting Bumpers
A large black bear clamped her jaws onto the scruff of a tiny cub and stepped out across the yellow center line.
Dozens of vehicles formed an unbroken line winding along the mountain two-lane road. Pickups, tour buses, and sedans sat completely still with their brake lights glowing against the grey pavement.
The mother bear kept her head raised high so the dangling youngster would not scrape the asphalt. The cub hung limply beneath her chin, its miniature hind legs curled inward as she moved past the front bumper of an idling car.
Her dark fur shifted over heavy shoulder blades with each deliberate step. She moved steadily toward the grassy roadside, keeping an uninterrupted rhythm across the open lane.
When her front paws struck the dirt shoulder, she leaned down near a patch of yellow dandelions. She relaxed her bite and set the small bundle safely down into the low clover.
The Lone Cry From Across The Pavement
A piercing, high-pitched cry erupted from across the two lanes of traffic. Over on the opposite edge line, a second cub sat upright on its hind legs.
The stranded youngster opened its jaws wide, tilting its head skyward as it vocalized into the open mountain air. Its front paws remained planted against the painted white stripe on the road.
The mother bear lifted her snout, swinging her gaze directly toward the sound. Her rounded ears rotated forward, pinning onto the tiny silhouette waiting by the far tree line.
She swung her bulk around, leaving the first cub beside the grass. Her paws hit the asphalt again as she started back across the road.
Tourists inside the parked vehicles watched silently through their windshields. The bear crossed the painted center divider without breaking stride, walking straight toward the lone cub.
The youngster scrambled forward on all fours as she drew near, pressing its nose toward her paws. She lowered her head, opened her jaws wide, and secured the loose skin along the back of its neck.
Gathering The Family In The Pines
The mother lifted the second cub cleanly off the roadway and pivoted back toward the waiting side.
The cub swayed gently between her front legs as she carried it across the empty lanes. Idling engines hummed in the background, but neither driver nor passenger made a sudden move.
She stepped back onto the gravel shoulder where the first cub sat waiting by the grass. Opening her jaws, she placed the second cub down right beside its sibling.
Both little bears immediately pressed against her flank, their dark coats blending into her thick fur. The mother nudged them forward with the side of her snout, guiding their movement up the slight embankment.
The cubs climbed up the slope, their small paws digging into the soft earth and dry pine needles. The sow took three long strides behind them, and all three animals disappeared beneath the low evergreen boughs of the forest.
