An Unusual Disturbance
The brown and white dog paced in tight circles around a plastic container flipped upside down beneath a wooden picnic bench.
Its ears twitched back, nose dipping directly toward the bottom seam where plastic met pine needles.
A sharp, high-pitched bark echoed through the tall pine trees.
A man dressed in a dark green jacket paused on the gravel path a few yards away, watching the animal’s frantic footwork.
The dog turned its head toward the man, took two steps forward, and issued another short, urgent bark.
Instead of running away into the forest, the dog spun back to face the gray container, planting its front paws firmly into the dirt.
Investigating the Bench
The man closed the distance, his boots crunching softly over scattered pine cones and dry gravel.
He stopped right beside the table leg and tilted his head downward, observing how the dog refused to leave the spot.
The dog nudged its black nose within an inch of the rim, sniffing rapidly as its tail gave a stiff, low wag.
The man bent his knees and lowered himself into a crouch beside the overturned box.
He placed his palms against the rough gray plastic on either side of the container.
The dog watched his hands, pressing closer against the wooden framework of the bench.
Pine needles rustled under the man’s boots as he shifted his weight to get a balanced grip.
He paused for a second, peering beneath the edge to see if anything was shifting against the ground.
Lifting the Cover
With slow, deliberate movements, the man raised the plastic tub upward by several inches.
A small, furry face pressed flat against the dark dirt came into view.
Tucked underneath the hollow shell sat a tiny puppy, its markings nearly identical to the larger dog standing guard above.
The little pup rested its front paws outward on the earth, blinking in the sudden forest light.
The older dog stretched its neck downward, lowering its muzzle toward the puppy’s forehead as the man raised the tub completely off the ground.
