A Struggle in the Wet Grass
A small lamb kicked its rear hooves against the damp soil, twisting its body inside a tangle of fine white netting.
The plastic mesh was wrapped around its torso and pinned its legs flat against the earth between two rows of fruit trees.
A few paces away, an adult ewe stopped chewing on low-hanging leaves and turned her head toward the rustling.
She lifted her muzzle and let out a short, nasal call, her hooves planted firmly in the sod as the lamb rolled onto its side.
Each twist of the young animal pulled the thin cord tighter against its brown and white fleece.
Working the Mesh Loose
Tall rubber work boots stepped into the frame, parting the tall blades of green grass.
A farmworker dropped to both knees in the dirt beside the thrashing lamb, placing two gloved hands lightly against its flank.
He kept his weight back and lowered his voice, murmuring steady syllables while his fingers found the main loop of the net.
The ewe took two deliberate steps forward, her ears angled toward the kneeling man as she watched his hands move.
The lamb let out a high-pitched bleat and kicked out again, its tiny dark hooves catching in the bottom strands.
The worker hooked his index finger beneath the taught filament near the animal’s neck, gently pulling the synthetic fibers outward.
He peeled the netting back over the lamb’s brown head, taking care not to pull its floppy ears against the cordage.
With the head free, the lamb pressed its chin against the worker’s heavy jacket while its rear legs remained pinned beneath its flank.
Unraveling the Hind Legs
The worker shifted his grip down to the lamb’s hips, bracing the animal against his knee so it could not roll back into the mess.
His gloved thumbs teased apart several tight knots that had gathered around the left hock.
A strand snapped back as he worked it over the small hoof, loosening the tension across the lamb’s lower back.
The lamb lifted its front quarters off the wet ground, shaking the damp dirt from its chest while the man freed its final hoof.
With both rear legs clear of the grid, the worker spread the netting flat on the soil behind him to keep the threads from snagging again.
He kept one hand loosely under the lamb’s belly until the young animal found its footing on the grass.
Rejoining the Flock
The lamb stumbled forward on stiff joints, taking two clumsy strides before catching its balance.
It shook its tail once, lowered its head, and sprinted straight down the row toward the waiting ewe.
The mother leaned down, touching her nose directly against the lamb’s damp muzzle as it reached her flank.
She turned her heavy body toward the orchard path, and the two walked side by side between the trees until disappearing into the grove.
