A Sudden Arrival At The Corner Table
An elderly man pushed open the glass cafe door, gripping a worn brown leather travel bag against his side.
He walked across the wooden floorboards in dark work trousers and a faded utility jacket, scanning the room for an empty seat.
At a nearby two-top table, a young woman lowered her porcelain mug and watched his boots drag across the floor.
She nudged the man sitting opposite her and leaned forward, wrinkling her nose as the older stranger pulled out a chair.
Her companion took a quick sip from his cup and shook his head, gesturing for her to leave the newcomer alone.
The grey-haired man slid into a small wooden chair tucked beneath a framed picture on the brick wall.
Counting Out Silver On Bare Wood
He reached into his jacket pocket and placed a tiny handful of coins onto the tabletop.
One by one, his calloused fingers slid the nickels and quarters across the grain, lining them up into two small stacks.
At the adjacent table, the young woman shielded the side of her mouth with one hand and whispered across the candles.
Her partner placed his flat palm on the wood, whispering back and tilting his head toward his own drink.
The server approached the small table and set down a single white espresso cup and saucer.
The older man tipped his head in thanks, picked up the ceramic rim, and tasted the warm drink while staring out the street window.
The woman rested her chin against her knuckles, her eyes staying fixed on his worn sleeves and silver hair.
The Leather Bag Under The Seat
The older man suddenly patted his sides, twisting his torso around both edges of the chair.
His hands checked the wooden seat beneath him, then slapped lightly against his empty lap.
Beneath the woman’s chair, the brown leather bag sat upright against the cast-iron table base.
She reached down between her knees, wrapped both hands around the leather handles, and lifted it into the light.
When she held it up toward him, the man exhaled and dropped to one knee to take the straps from her fingers.
He carried the bag over to their table, unzipped the main compartment, and pulled out an antique wooden picture frame.
He held the glass surface toward the light, showing a black-and-white portrait of a young woman with dark hair.
A Picture On The Table
The woman asked whose face was inside the glass, leaning over the tabletop to see the details.
The man tapped the glass gently with his thumb, explaining that the girl had once offered shelter and funds to a local shopkeeper.
The cafe employee walked over to collect the empty cups, then stopped dead in his tracks beside the wooden chairs.
He locked his eyes onto the portrait, his lower lip parting as a tear rolled down his cheek.
He wiped his sleeve across his face, pointed at the photo, and stepped closer to the older man’s shoulder.
The young woman pulled her hands together against her chest, lowering her chin toward the table in quiet acknowledgment.
The older man placed his palms flat beside the frame, nodding back at her with a gentle tilt of his head.
All three sat together around the wooden table, lifting their white coffee cups as the afternoon light poured through the cafe glass.
