An Unexpected Standoff on the Path
The brightly colored male wood duck flared his wings and lunged straight at the man’s gray sneakers.
Joggers continued past in the background, but the walker stopped in his tracks, pulling his feet back as the drake pecked at his laces.
Beside the drake stood a female wood duck, her neck stretched forward as she issued a series of sharp, rhythmic calls.
Between the two adults, a tiny duckling lay flat against the rough asphalt, completely immobile.
Every time the man shifted his weight forward, the male bird snapped its bill and beat its wings against the air.
Instead of turning around or nudging past the birds, the man dropped his shoulders and stopped moving.
Lowering Down to Look Closer
He bent his knees and lowered himself into a deep squat directly in front of the small group.
His hands rested on his knees, palms open, giving the adult birds space while he leaned his torso closer to the pavement.
The drake lowered its wings slightly, though both adults kept their eyes fixed on the man’s hands.
Up close, the duckling was not merely resting in the afternoon sun.
The young bird remained pinned on its side, kicking its tiny webbed feet weakly without making any forward progress.
The man brought both hands down, cupping his fingers around the duckling’s small body to lift it off the stone dust.
The parent birds did not flee; they stepped closer, tilting their bills toward his palms and letting out quiet, low whistles.
The Hidden Obstacle
As the man raised the duckling into the light, he turned the small body sideways between his fingers.
A thick, black elastic hair tie was looped tightly around the young bird’s torso and left wing.
The band dug into the downy feathers, pinning the wing against the ribcage and anchoring one leg in place.
Holding the chick securely in his left palm, he used his right thumb and forefinger to catch the edge of the rubber band.
The adult birds stretched their necks upward, bills inches from his knuckles, watching the movement of his fingers.
He eased the tight loop over the duckling’s tiny foot, sliding the band millimeter by millimeter over the joint.
With a gentle tug, the elastic slipped over the wing and cleared the head, coming away completely clean in his fingers.
Returning to the Water
The man set the small bird back down on the level surface of the trail.
The duckling gave a quick shake of its body, spread both wings, and immediately took three rapid steps toward the female.
The drake stepped forward, brushing his bill against the chick’s back before turning toward the edge of the path.
The man pushed himself up from his crouch, stepping back onto the grass to give the family a clear path forward.
Side by side, the three ducks waddled down the gravel bank toward the lake.
The chick pushed off the grassy shoreline, paddling between the two adults across the ripples of the open water.
