A Sudden Approach on the Rocks
Two bare hands reached forward across the wet, barnacle-crusted stone toward the base of the bird’s spine.
A thick ring of clear, rigid plastic gripped tightly around the penguin’s lower abdomen and thighs. The jagged, flared collar flared outward like a rigid skirt, pinning its tail feathers down against the dark rock.
The penguin stood facing the surf, shifting its weight from one pink webbed foot to the other. Its small dark eyes darted sideways, tracking the fingers drawing closer from behind.
Prying Away the Sharp Edges
Fingertips slid beneath the top rim of the translucent shell, testing the grip against the dense feathers. The plastic was stiff, cut with sharp points that dug directly into the bird’s flank whenever it leaned forward.
A pair of thumbs hooked under the split seam along the bird’s left side. The penguin tilted its beak skyward, fluttering its stiff flippers but holding its feet planted against the stone.
The rescuer squeezed the plastic halves apart, applying steady outward pressure. A sharp snap echoed as the material bent backward, releasing its bite against the bird’s white-and-black down.
One side peeled away, then the other, pulling free from the tail feathers without catching on the skin.
A Moment on the Shoreline
The cracked plastic shell dropped onto the slick, wet ledge with a hollow clatter. Both hands withdrew completely, pulling back several feet to give the bird room.
The penguin did not bolt immediately. It remained upright on the ledge, rolling its shoulders and shaking its tail feathers from side to side.
It stretched its neck forward, testing its balance without the rigid cup pressing against its hips. With each small twitch, the compressed feathers expanded back into place.
Heading Back to the Water
The bird took its first clean stride forward across the dark stone, no longer hindered by the plastic collar. It waddled down the sloping rock face toward the breaking foam, its flippers outstretched for balance.
A wave rolled across the lower shelf, splashing saltwater over its feet. The penguin hopped into the incoming surge and paddled out past the rocks, disappearing beneath the grey surface of the ocean.
