An Heirloom Handed Over
A young man extended his arm and dropped an antique brass key into the open palm of an elderly craftsman. Sunlight poured through the garage window, cutting across the weathered dark wood of an upright piano standing between them.
The boy explained that rent was due the next day. The woodworker, Arthur, rested a hand gently against the boy’s dark hooded sweatshirt and promised to care for the instrument’s voice.
Once alone in his workshop, Arthur tied on a heavy leather apron and picked up a dry cotton rag. He ran the cloth along the instrument’s dull wooden top, rubbing away decades of accumulated dust.
Underneath the grime, rich amber-toned wood began to catch the overhead lamp. Arthur worked methodically, wiping down the exterior panels before reaching for his mechanical tuning tools.
An Unmarked Compartment
Arthur leaned over the exposed piano harp with a wrench in hand. Beside him stood an older colleague in a tweed suit, squinting through a brass handheld magnifying glass.
Arthur reached beneath the hammer assembly and gripped the edge of a thick paper bundle. He pulled it up into the lamplight, revealing aged, yellowed pages bound with red ribbon and stamped with a cracked wax seal.
His colleague gasped, pressing a hand to his mouth. Through his glass, the musical notation became clear: an authentic nineteenth-century original manuscript.
The visitor reminded Arthur that he had purchased the piano for a mere fifty dollars. He noted that the paperwork could easily remain a secret, leaving Arthur with a small fortune.
Arthur continued wiping the wood with his cloth, not shifting his gaze. He stated plainly that an honest craftsman does not take what belongs to another family.
Returning The Legacy
Arthur secured the brittle pages behind glass in a wooden preservation frame. He then loaded the restored upright into the bed of his blue transport truck.
Minutes later, Arthur pulled up to the young man’s front door and lowered the polished piano onto the pavement. The boy stepped onto the porch, eyes widening as he recognized the gleaming instrument.
Arthur carried the framed manuscript inside the house and placed it into the boy’s hands. The boy stared at the notes his great-grandfather had hidden nearly a century ago, his jaw trembling as tears gathered on his cheeks.
Arthur patted his shoulder and motioned toward the freshly polished bench. The boy sat down, spread his fingers across the ivory keys, and pressed the opening chord.
Arthur stood by the window with his hands folded in front of his apron, watching the boy play as morning light filled the room.
