An Empty Wallet at Lane Five
The young father opened his worn wallet, his fingers sorting through empty slots before pulling out a bank card that had already failed once.
Beside him, his young daughter clutched a plush bunny tightly against her chest, her eyes darting between the scanner screen and the grocery bags piled at the end of the belt.
He looked at the cashier, his shoulders slumping as he began sliding items away from the register. An elderly woman standing directly behind them reached into her purse, pulled out a twenty-dollar bill, and extended it across the counter.
He tried to wave her hand away, shaking his head while looking at the floor, but she pressed the bill into the cashier’s palm and told him to get his little girl home.
A Discovery in the Parking Lot
Outside by his car trunk, the father lifted the paper grocery sacks into the back of his vehicle, his daughter watching him quietly from the curb.
Another shopper from the checkout line approached the open trunk and stopped a few feet away, resting his hands on his jacket.
The bystander explained that the woman who had helped him had walked directly over to the in-store pharmacy counter immediately afterward.
She had counted out coins on the counter surface, only to learn she was exactly twenty dollars short of paying for her own prescription medicine.
The cashier had held the paper bag behind the glass, unable to release the bottle until the remaining balance was cleared.
Returning to the Counter
The father shut the vehicle hatch and walked back through the sliding glass doors with his daughter holding his hand.
He spotted the elderly woman sitting quietly on a wooden bench near the pharmacy counter, her brown leather purse resting across her lap.
She told him to keep his resources for his child and said nobody owed her anything for what she had done earlier.
He walked straight up to the prescription window, set his card down onto the countertop, and nodded to the pharmacist to ring up the remaining balance.
The pharmacist took the card, ran the transaction, and slid the white bag with the blue mortar emblem across the counter toward the woman’s hands.
The father looked down at his daughter, who tightened her grip on her stuffed bunny while looking up at the woman holding her medicine bag.
