Turned Away at the Archway
An elderly woman shuffled across the polished marble floor of the courthouse atrium, clutching a weathered bundle of dog-eared legal documents against her chest.
Her oversized coat hung loose over a faded floral skirt, and her flat slip-on shoes clicked rhythmically against the stone tiles.
A uniformed security officer stepped directly into her path, extending his forearm to block her stride.
“Stop! You’re not going inside,” he barked, his face tightening into a scowl. “Step away from the entrance.”
The woman halted mid-step. She pulled the thick stack of papers closer to her ribs, her knuckles pale against the frayed cardboard binding.
“I have an appointment with the judge,” she answered quietly, looking up into his face.
A Pointed Accusation
The guard leaned forward, jutting his chin out as passersby in suits bustled past the metal detectors behind him.
“I told you to leave,” he snapped, raising an index finger and jabbing it toward the exit. “You are not going inside.”
The woman blinked slowly. Her posture remained upright, her shoulders square despite the worn collar of her coat.
“I have official business with the judge,” she repeated, her voice level and unhurried.
“Then prove it!” the guard shouted, crossing his arms and planting his feet wider apart on the marble.
She began shifting the heavy folder in her hands, her fingers preparing to untie the worn cord around the records.
The Opening Doors
Before she could loosen the binding, the heavy mahogany double doors behind the guard swung inward.
A tall man with silver hair and a flowing black judicial robe stepped into the doorway frame, his eyes locking onto the confrontation.
“Officer, step away from her!” the judge shouted, his arm extending outward with an index finger pointed squarely at the guard.
The officer spun around, his jaw slackening as his hand instinctively touched his badge. “Your Honor?”
“She is here at my request,” the judge declared, taking a stride forward into the open hall. “Let her through.”
The guard pulled his hands back toward his duty belt, clearing the threshold as he pressed his back against the wall.
Entering the Chambers
The judge turned to the woman, softening his voice as he looked down at the bundle resting against her coat.
“Please come with me,” he said, gesturing toward the interior corridor. “We have a hearing to prepare.”
The woman gave a single nod, adjusting the weight of the papers under her arm as she stepped past the checkpoint.
The judge shifted his gaze back to the officer, staring directly into the officer’s eyes.
“And you will explain exactly why you stopped her,” the judge said, his voice flat and stern.
The guard looked down at the marble floor, his chin pressed toward his chest as he stepped aside.
The woman and the judge walked through the entrance side by side, and the two heavy wooden doors clicked shut behind them.
