A Question on the Showroom Floor
An older man tapped his knuckle lightly against the gleaming silver panel of a luxury SUV. His scuffed leather boots squeaked against the polished showroom tiles as he took a step forward.
He wore a faded brown work coat, marked by dust and daily use, over a pair of worn denim jeans. He turned toward the young salesman dressed in a tailored navy suit.
“How much is this SUV?” the older man asked quietly.
The salesman chuckled under his breath and crossed his arms across his crisp white shirt. He tilted his head back, letting his gaze drift down the visitor’s weathered jacket.
“That one?” the salesman said with a smirk. “You should probably look somewhere else.”
The older man did not step back. His hands remained resting near the pockets of his coat as he stood beside the silver vehicle.
“These vehicles cost serious money,” the salesman continued, stepping closer and waving a dismissive hand toward the door. “Don’t waste my time.”
“I only asked for the price,” the older man answered, his voice level and steady.
A Scene in Plain View
The salesman let out another loud laugh that echoed off the high glass walls of the dealership. He extended a stiff finger, pointing directly toward the street outside.
“Then ask somewhere you can actually afford,” he stated sharply.
Across the tiled floor, several customers stopped looking at price stickers and turned around. Two other employees paused beside a glass partition, their eyes locked on the two men standing by the SUV.
The showroom grew quiet except for the hum of the overhead ventilation system. The older man did not raise his voice or shift his feet.
Then the rapid click of dress shoes echoed across the tile floor. A woman wearing a dark business suit cut directly between the salesman and the SUV.
She stopped beside the older man, turning her eyes toward his worn jacket before looking up at his face. Her brow furrowed as she looked at her colleague.
“Sir, why are you being treated like this?” she asked.
An Abrupt Turn
The salesman shrugged his shoulders casually, letting one hand rest against his side. He shook his head and offered an easy grin.
“He can’t afford this SUV,” the salesman remarked, casually brushing a speck off his lapel. “I was handling it.”
The woman turned her entire body toward him, her hands clenched at her sides. Her voice dropped low enough for the nearby customers to hear every syllable.
“You don’t remember him?” she said. “He owns this dealership group.”
The salesman’s mouth dropped open. His eyes widened into round saucers as all the color drained from his cheeks.
He took a half-step back, his fingers twitching against the seam of his trousers. The smug grin vanished entirely from his face, replaced by a slack jaw.
The older man slowly reached into the pocket of his canvas coat and pulled out a key fob. He held the key in his open palm, looking straight at the stunned employee.
“I came here to buy a car,” the older man said evenly. “I didn’t expect to be judged by the clothes I’m wearing.”
The Final Word
The salesman opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. His hands fluttered at his waist before dropping limp.
The woman raised her right hand and pointed her index finger straight toward the exit doors. Her jaw was set hard.
“You’re finished,” she told the young man. “Leave the showroom.”
The dismissed salesman stood paralyzed on the white tile as the surrounding staff watched from behind the display partitions. Not a single person moved to defend him.
The older man turned his back on the salesman and walked to the driver’s side of the silver SUV. He pulled the silver handle, opened the heavy door, and stepped inside.
