Wader Steps Into Frigid Water To Approach A Struggling Predator

  • 3 min read

Trapped in the Frigid Water

A broad white wing beat violently against the gray water, throwing spray across the open lake.

The snowy owl thrashed in place, its heavy winter plumage soaked through and dragging it under the surface. It could not gain traction to lift into the air.

A man wearing thick chest waders sloshed directly into the waist-deep water, pushing forward against the chop toward the exhausted bird.

Reaching Into the Swell

The owl flapped harder as the man approached, whipping white foam across his chest.

Its yellow eyes locked on the outstretched hands while its dark beak clicked against the wind. The rescuer kept his balance on the slick stones underneath, moving his boots forward an inch at a time.

He dropped low into the water, timing the bird’s flailing to slip his bare hand under its chest.

With a sudden scoop, he gathered the soaking wings and pinned them safely against the owl’s body. The bird let out a sharp cry before settling heavily against the front of his rubber waders.

Holding the wild raptor wrapped securely against his torso, he turned around and began the slow trudge back toward the rocky shore.

A Tug on the Trail

Along a paved path near the shoreline, another sudden encounter brought a walker to an immediate stop.

A mother Canada goose charged behind a man, clamped its beak onto the tail of his blue shirt, and pulled back hard. The man spun around on his heel, looking down at the agitated bird clinging to his clothes.

A few feet behind the goose lay a tiny downy gosling, flattened completely against the sunlit stone pavement.

The chick kept its neck limp against the ground, too weak to follow the rest of its flock.

Guiding the Little One Up

The man lowered himself onto one knee right in front of the fallen chick, while the adult goose watched his every move from inches away.

He did not grab the baby. Instead, he gently tapped the tips of his fingers against the stones beside its beak, mimicking the peck of an adult bird.

The small yellow head twitched, reacting to the tapping sound. It lifted its neck off the pavement and blinked open both eyes.

With another light scratch on the stone from the man’s fingertips, the chick scrambled onto its tiny webbed feet, wobbling slightly before finding its balance.

The mother goose flared her wings low to the ground, shielding the chick from behind as the two birds waddled side-by-side down the park path.
