Man Finds Injured Predator On Hot Asphalt And Steps In

  • 3 min read

A Sprawled Predator On The Pavement

A runner dropped his pace to a walk and approached a massive bird lying motionless against the dark asphalt. The bald eagle rested on its stomach, both wings spread wide across the travel lane while passing cars slowed to navigate around it.

Its yellow beak opened wide, emitting a sharp, rhythmic cry each time the man took another step closer. The runner unfolded a white cotton towel from his hands and knelt onto one knee beside the distressed raptor.

He positioned the cloth loosely across the bird’s shoulders, shielding its eyes to reduce its field of view. The eagle snapped its beak upward into the air, its neck muscles straining against the road surface.

Calming The Stranded Raptor

The man rested one palm gently against the feathers on the eagle’s crown, stroking the white plumage in slow, deliberate motions. With each stroke, the bird’s frantic vocalizations softened into quieter gasps.

Reaching into his pocket with his free hand, the man pulled out a clear plastic bottle of drinking water. He unscrewed the blue cap with his thumb and slowly tipped the container, letting cool water soak into the white towel draped over the bird’s back.

The damp fabric clung to the dark feathers beneath, countering the midday heat radiating from the blacktop. The eagle’s head lowered several inches, resting flat against the ground as the water spread.

Securing The Cargo

Tucking the corners of the towel under the bird’s primary wing joints, the man gathered the bundle tight against his torso. He stood upward in a single fluid lift, wrapping both arms around the raptor’s feathered frame.

The bird released one final shrill shriek into the open air as its talons hung suspended above the pavement. The man walked directly to a four-door sedan idling near the treeline with the rear door pulled wide open.

He leaned forward into the passenger compartment, placing the towel-bound bird onto the flat surface of the back seat. He smoothed the cloth around its sides once more, then clicked the vehicle door shut.

Arrival At The Clinic

Through the rear window of the moving car, the eagle remained resting against the white cloth, watching the passing trees through the glass. The driver maintained an even speed until turning into a gravel driveway beside an intake facility.

Inside the brightly lit examination room, a wildlife technician in blue scrub pants and rubber examination gloves stepped forward to meet him. She positioned her gloved hands around the towel bundle, taking the bird’s weight onto an examination table under the ceiling lights.
