A Cry For Help On The Asphalt
The veteran officer clutched his left chest pocket, his boots scraping backward across the damp asphalt before his knees buckled completely.
Beside him, a golden retriever planted all four paws along the curb, facing outward toward the oncoming rush of yellow taxis and delivery vans. The dog threw its head back, barking sharply into the lane of moving vehicles while nudging its muzzle against the officer’s shoulder patch.
Tires skidded against the road divider as a silver sedan pulled abruptly onto the shoulder. The driver door swung open, and a young woman in a denim jacket sprinted across the cracked pavement to drop onto her knees beside the fallen officer.
She pressed trembling fingers against his uniform jacket, speaking directly into his unblinking face while dialing three digits on her mobile phone. Her voice shook through the receiver as she described their exact intersection, never pulling her other hand away from the trembling dog’s neck.
The dog pressed its flank tightly against the officer’s hip, lowering its head to rest directly beside the man’s limp hand.
The Arrival Of Sirens And Defibrillators
Two flashing red light bars appeared over the crest of the hill, cutting through the stalled commuter traffic with high-pitched wails. Paramedics swung the rear doors open before the vehicle even came to a complete halt, hauling a heavy trauma kit and cardiac monitor straight onto the pavement.
The male paramedic tore open the officer’s shirt buttons, placing firm palms over the center of the sternum to begin rhythmic compressions. Beside him, his partner ripped open the adhesive foil packaging of defibrillator pads, smoothing them against the gray skin of the officer’s chest.
The digital monitor screen flickered with irregular spikes while a synthetic tone announced the machine was charging to two hundred joules. Everyone stepped back for a single second as the electrical pulse discharged through the officer’s torso, jolting his shoulders off the ground.
They lifted him onto the metal gurney, securing two wide black straps across his waist and legs. The golden retriever trotted directly behind the wheels, refusing to break stride as the crew slid the metal frame into the ambulance bay.
Inside the hospital corridor, the gurney rolled through wide double doors into Trauma Bay One, the dog staying glued to the paramedic’s heels beneath the fluorescent ceiling strips.
A Vigil Outside Room One
Behind the large plate-glass observation window of the intensive care unit, three uniformed patrol officers gathered with their hands clasped behind their duty belts.
The young woman pressed both palms against the glass pane, her eyes fixed on the bedside monitor that tracked a slowly stabilizing green line. Beside her leg, the retriever sat upright on the polished linoleum floor, nose pressed flat against the transparent partition.
Inside the room, nurses adjusted transparent IV drip lines and secured a clear oxygen cannula beneath the officer’s nose. His eyelids twitched twice before opening halfway, his gaze drifting immediately toward the window where the golden head remained motionless.
Hours later, the officer sat propped against a stack of pillows, lifting a small plastic fork toward his mouth while smiling at the small crowd clustered around his mattress. At the foot of his bed, the retriever buried its muzzle into a wide plastic bowl of food, its tail sweeping rhythmic thuds against the metal frame.
A Medal For A Loyal Partner
Outside the brick facade of the fourth precinct station, a row of black-and-white cruisers sat parked under the afternoon sun. Several patrolmen formed an open semi-circle along the entrance walkway, watching as the recovered officer lowered himself onto one knee on the concrete.
The golden retriever stood facing him, its front paws planted firmly on the sidewalk while panting softly. The officer slipped a dark blue ribbon over the dog’s ears, settling a brass department medal right over the center of its chest harness.
The officer clamped his hands around the dog’s muzzle in a firm embrace, laughing aloud as the retriever gripped the medal ribbon between its teeth while the surrounding squad broke into synchronized applause.
