Technician Must Choose When Impatient Client Threatens To Fire Him On Site

  • 3 min read

A Race Against The Clock

The repairman pressed the heat gun closer to the base of the refrigerator, blowing hot air onto the frozen coils. Behind him, a homeowner folded her arms and tapped her shoe against the floorboards, counting every passing minute.

She pointed a finger toward the window where an old white work van sat parked on the curb. She reminded him that his father had rung her doorbell eleven times during his previous visit, and she made it clear that her patience had run out.

The repairman tightened a screw beneath the freezer panel and promised to finish quickly. Outside, the elderly man sat wrapped in a wool scarf inside the passenger cabin, inhaling deeply as the faint aroma of fresh fruit drifted past the window.

An Unexpected Disappearance

“Strawberries,” the old man whispered to himself, his hand trembling as he leaned toward the open glass. When his son glanced out from the kitchen and motioned for him to stay seated, the father gave a brief nod, but his fingers were already tugging at the door handle.

The door clicked open against the quiet street. The old man stepped onto the asphalt, shuffling across the lawn toward a nearby brick porch where a warm foil-wrapped dish rested on a patio table.

He lifted the aluminum lid, revealing a freshly baked strawberry pie venting steam into the crisp autumn air. Behind the screen door, a neighbor emerged holding a pair of heavy pruning shears, staring in surprise at the stranger standing by her railing.

The horn sounded as the repairman sprinted across the front yard. He placed himself between the porch steps and his father, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his wallet to hand cash to the neighbor for the dessert.

Walking Away From The Job

Back inside the kitchen, the homeowner stood with her arms crossed over her apron, pointing toward the front entry. She warned him that if he stepped away from the appliance again, she would hire a different service company and cancel his fee.

The technician set down his wrench. He slid the access panel back onto the lower cabinet, slotted his tools into his canvas shoulder bag, and zipped the pouch shut.

He informed her that food could be placed in the garage to stay cool, picked up both equipment bags, and walked out the door into the daylight without looking back.

Sharing A Slice On The Road

Inside the work van, the technician sliced a triangle of warm pie, laid it onto a paper plate, and handed it across the center console. The elderly man held the plate with both hands, taking a large bite as red syrup dotted the corner of his mouth.

The son smiled, reached over to wipe his father’s chin, and adjusted the passenger seatbelt across his sweater. He slotted his mobile phone into the dashboard holder and shifted the transmission into drive.

The van rolled down the residential street under the afternoon sun, the grandfather resting the tin of pie on his lap while looking out the passenger window.
