A Rough Ride Down The Narrow Aisle
An elderly woman gripped the yellow handrail of a moving city bus, dragging a black tote bag against the rubber flooring. Her knuckles stayed white as she shifted her weight onto a wooden cane with every jolt of the vehicle.
A few feet ahead, a young man sat stretched across his seat with his white sneakers planted firmly in the middle of the walking path. White earbuds blocked out the engine noise while his thumbs flicked across a glowing smartphone screen.
She took two short, shuffled steps forward and paused directly beside his knee. Her woolen coat pulled open slightly, revealing a small medical monitor strapped tightly against her chest.
The young man glanced up from his screen for a split second. His eyebrows lifted as his eyes swept over the medical device, yet his feet remained planted across the walkway.
The Sudden Shift
The bus driver slammed on the brakes as traffic bunched up ahead. The sudden deceleration threw the woman forward, breaking her grip on the upright metal pole.
Her cloth bag hit the floor, spilling bright red apples across the ribbed rubber matting. Her cane clattered against the wall panel as her balance failed completely.
The young man dropped his phone onto the cushion. He lunged forward from his seat, throwing both arms around her shoulders before her knees could strike the metal floor.
He absorbed her full weight against his chest, sliding his boots outward to brace against the momentum of the stopping bus. With firm hands under her arms, he guided her backward into the empty seat he had just vacated.
She sank into the cushioned bench, pressing one hand to her chest monitor while catching her breath. He knelt down beside her knees to confirm she was upright before letting go.
Clearing The Floor
Red fruit continued rolling toward the rear entrance as passengers watched from the surrounding rows. Another woman reached down to trap a stray apple with the toe of her boot.
The young man dropped to both knees in the center aisle. He reached beneath the passenger seats, gathering the scattered apples two at a time and placing them back inside the black tote.
He tied the handles securely and set the bag right beside her feet, resting his hand briefly against the cane to ensure it stayed propped against the window frame.
A mother with an infant stroller boarded at the next transfer stop. The young man stood upright against the handrail, shifting his shoulders back to give the carriage clear passage through the center aisle.
Stepping Onto The Curb
When the bus finally pulled up to the concrete platform of her destination, the bell chimed twice overhead. The woman gripped her cane and leaned forward to stand.
The young man took the heavy grocery tote by the straps with one hand. With his other arm, he offered his elbow for support as she navigated the narrow steps toward the exit doors.
The pneumatic doors hissed open against the sidewalk curb. He stepped down first onto the concrete, holding the tote steady as she planted her cane onto the pavement.
On the sidewalk, he transferred the bag into her left hand. The young man flashed a quick smile, stepped back inside through the open doors, and the bus pulled away into city traffic.
