Staff Refuses Room Reservation Based Strictly On Customer Appearance

A Cold Reception At The Front Desk

A gray-haired man in a dark jacket placed a brown paper sack onto the polished marble counter.

The desk manager crossed her arms over her navy blazer. Her eyebrows tightened as her gaze traveled from his scuffed shoes up to his open collar.

She tilted her head and asked if he had pulled his clothing from a garbage bin outside.

The man kept his hands resting on the counter. He spoke at a low, measured volume, stating he had a reservation for Room 412.

The manager tightened her lips into a thin line and did not touch her keyboard. She waved one hand toward the revolving glass doors behind him.

She told him guests like him belonged at the roadside motel down the road, not in their luxury suites.

He asked to speak directly with the property manager. Her chin lifted slightly as she tapped the golden nameplate pinned to her lapel.

An Unexpected Interruption Behind The Counter

She announced that she held the management position herself. Then she pointed her index finger straight toward the exit, telling him to leave the building immediately.

Before he could step away, a second desk clerk rushed forward clutching a black desk telephone receiver.

The clerk pressed the receiver against her shoulder, eyes wide as she looked at her supervisor. She announced that the corporate office was on line one regarding an unannounced ownership review.

The manager stared back at the screen, her brow furrowing deeply. She leaned over the terminal and asked why nobody had sent prior notice about any review.

A uniformed concierge stepped alongside the desk, peering over the monitor. He read aloud that paperwork filed six months earlier authorized the new majority owner to conduct a personal walkthrough without warning.

The manager tapped rapidly at the keys, her mouth slightly agape as record files loaded onto the screen.

The Test Revealed

She shook her head repeatedly, murmuring that the file details were impossible.

The man across the desk straightened his spine. He reached into his inner pocket and fastened a gold brass identifier over his chest pocket.

He stated flatly that his plain suit was deliberate. He called the encounter an intentional test of staff conduct, one she had failed completely.

The manager took a half-step back, her fingers slipping off the edge of the computer stand. She stammered that corporate rules prevented him from firing her on the spot.

His expression remained completely flat. He stated quietly that her dismissal had already taken effect.

A brief smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth before he turned his back on the reception desk.

He walked away across the reflective marble floor tiles, his black dress shoes clicking rhythmically under the central chandelier as he headed straight toward the private elevators.
