Camper Follows His Barking Dog To A Covered Hole

  • 3 min read

Scratching at the Dirt

The black Labrador drove his front paws into the dry earth, sending sprays of dust over a white plastic board.

He stopped, pressed his wet snout against the rim, and peered into a narrow gap between the plastic and the ground.

Two tiny, dark paws poked out from the shadow beneath the rim, clawing weakly at the loose sand.

The dog snapped his head back, threw his chest forward, and let out three sharp barks toward the pine trees.

He dropped onto his haunches, fixed his gaze on the plastic lid, and let out another short rumble from his throat.

Across the clearing, near the green dome tent, a man stepped away from a wooden picnic table.

The man walked briskly along the dirt trail, keeping his eyes locked on the dog’s rigid posture.

Lifting the Hidden Cover

The Labrador stood up again as his owner approached, nudging the edge of the plastic board with his nose.

The man bent his knees and crouched in the dirt beside the dog.

He gripped the corners of the flat plastic tray with both hands and slowly pulled it upward.

Sand cascaded off the sides, trickling down into a shallow, hand-dug bowl in the earth.

Curled in the center of the pit was a tiny black puppy covered in fine beige dust.

The puppy blinked against the sudden morning sunlight, wobbling on soft paws as it lifted its round snout.

The man set the white plastic board onto the grass beside his boots and remained still on one knee.

A Gentle Greeting in the Sand

The older Labrador stepped forward, lowering his head until his nose touched the puppy’s dusty forehead.

The pup leaned upward, stretching its front legs and touching its tiny muzzle against the older dog’s mouth.

The adult dog gave a gentle lick across the puppy’s ear, brushing away loose crumbs of dried soil.

With a clumsy scramble, the puppy clawed its way up the slope of the depression and stood on level ground.

The man reached down, cupping his fingers briefly behind the puppy’s neck, checking for injuries.

The puppy shook its entire body, creating a tiny cloud of dust before trotting close to the man’s work boots.

The Labrador circled once, keeping his snout low to guide the little newcomer forward.

Walking Back to Camp

The man stood up, tucked the white plastic board under his left arm, and turned toward the campsite.

He took slow, measured steps down the dirt path leading between the tall pines and the mountain ridge.

The small puppy matched his pace, trotting steadily beside the man’s right boot.

The adult Labrador walked along the puppy’s outer flank, his tail wagging in slow, steady arcs.

Halfway down the path, the man reached down with his free hand and tapped the puppy gently on the rear as they walked toward the green tent.
