The Fallen Cart
The leather boot struck the wooden corner of the fruit cart with a dull crack, tilting the tabletop downward.
A dozen heavy orange pumpkins broke free from their straw bedding, rolling across the stone promenade. Some struck the pavement with loud thuds, while others bounced near the riverbank edge.
The elderly vendor dropped her hands forward, bending at the waist as she reached out to shield her display. Her fingers brushed against the splintered wood of the collapsed leg.
Instead of offering assistance, the man stood over the mess, pointing one finger toward the scattered gourds while laughing aloud. Several pedestrians stopped in their tracks along the riverside path, turning their heads toward the commotion.
Beside the vendor’s apron stood a golden retriever wearing a green collar. The dog did not bark or whine. His ears stood upright as his eyes followed the pointing finger and the man’s face.
Paws Along the Pier
The man turned his back on the broken table, tucking his hands into his pockets. He strolled casually along the edge of the stone retaining wall overlooking the river channel.
Behind him, the golden retriever stepped away from the woman’s side. The dog kept his head lowered, moving steadily in the footsteps left across the fallen autumn leaves.
Step by step, the gap between the man and the dog narrowed. The man looked out over the open water, smiling to himself as tourist boats drifted beneath the distant arched bridge.
He walked closer to the unprotected edge, where the stone surface dropped straight down into the cold harbor water. The retriever matched his pace, placing each paw silently onto the stone walkway.
The Sudden Splash
When the man paused right at the edge of the drop, the retriever broke into a short, purposeful trot. The dog threw both front paws directly into the small of the man’s back.
The man lost his footing instantly. His arms whipped out into the air, his coat flying wide as he tipped backward off the stone curb.
A loud wall of white water erupted upward as his back slammed into the river. A circular wave surged out against the stone wall, sending foam over the floating fallen leaves.
A second later, his head surfaced from the murky green water. He gasped for air, wiping soaked hair away from his eyes while spitting water back toward the pier.
Returning to the Table
On the promenade above, bystanders lined the stone edge to watch the drenched figure tread water. The golden retriever turned around completely and began trotting back toward the fallen stand.
Another pedestrian had already crouched beside the elderly woman, lifting the heavy pumpkins back onto the wooden planks. The vendor looked up as the dog approached, her expression softening into a wide smile.
She extended both hands to rub the retriever behind the ears, patting his golden fur. Just beyond them, the soaked man stood shivering waist-deep in the river current, watching the pumpkins get stacked back into neat piles.
