Runner Follows Crying Mother Deer Toward A Deep Roadside Ditch

  • 3 min read

An Unexpected Encounter Along the Treeline

A doe charged directly toward the edge of the asphalt, opening her mouth to let out a sharp cry.

She stopped inches from a passing runner, stomping her hooves into the gravel before pivoting back toward the ditch.

The runner halted his stride, his sneakers digging into the dirt shoulder as he watched her back away.

She took three steps into the grass, turned her head over her shoulder, and cried out once more.

Instead of fleeing into the thick timber, the doe remained fully visible, pacing in tight circles alongside the drainage trench.

Following the Mother Into the Tall Grass

The runner stepped off the paved road and pressed through the tangled weeds behind her.

With every step he took, the doe retreated just enough to keep distance while staying directly in his line of sight.

She paused near a deep seam in the ground where runoff water had carved through the mud and rocks.

Her ears flicked back toward the man as she stared down into the narrow, shadowed crevice.

The runner crouched low, balancing on the damp slope to peer between the overgrown blades of wild grass.

Down inside the slick trench, a spotted fawn lay wedged tightly between jagged stones and wet earth.

The young animal kicked its slender legs against the mud walls, unable to find traction on the vertical drop.

Reaching Down Into the Mud

The doe stood on the crest of the ditch, shifting her weight from side to side while watching the runner descend.

He planted his shoes firmly against the clay wall, lowering his center of gravity to avoid sliding down onto the trapped fawn.

Reaching out with both arms, he slid his open palms beneath the fawn’s small chest and hindquarters.

The fawn let out a faint bleat, pressing its head flat against the man’s forearm as he gained a firm grip.

He straightened his knees, lifting the lightweight body up and out of the narrow rock seam.

Loose gravel tumbled down into the empty gap where the young animal had just been stuck.

Cradling the fawn against his torso, the runner climbed back up the grassy embankment toward flat ground.

Reunion at the Forest Border

The mother stepped forward immediately, closing the gap between them until her snout brushed the fawn’s spotted flank.

The runner lowered his hands to the turf, allowing the fawn’s hooves to touch the soil.

As soon as its legs found purchase, the fawn scrambled toward its mother’s side.

The doe lowered her head, licking the damp fur along the fawn’s neck and back with quick, sweeping strokes.

The fawn matched her pace, tucking itself close beneath her shoulder as she turned toward the trees.

Both animals broke into an easy stride, bounding through the low brush and vanishing into the dense green forest.
