Delivery Driver Wrongly Suspected In Luxury Penthouse Gets A Risky Proposal

  • 4 min read

A Morning Countdown on Manhattan Streets

Jake kicked his worn sneakers off the bedroom floor and pulled on his dark work jacket. His phone lit up against the mattress, displaying an incoming text with stark black numbers: rent due today, twelve hundred dollars.

He pocketed the phone, pushed open the lobby door of his brick apartment building, and swung his leg over his bicycle. The city was already humming with yellow cabs and crowded crosswalks as he leaned forward over the handlebars, pedaling through Midtown traffic.

At a red light, he glanced down at his handlebar mount. An order alert flashed on the screen for Carter Tower on Fifth Avenue, a glass skyscraper stretching into the morning clouds. He wiped sweat from his temple, clicked accept, and pedaled toward the gleaming entrance.

The Check at the Penthouse Elevator

A uniformed security guard stepped in front of the lobby desk the second Jake walked through the glass revolving door. The officer pointed toward a side hallway, stating that delivery drop-offs had to use the service entrance around the corner.

Jake lifted the brown paper package in his hand and explained that he had an order to deliver directly. Seconds later, the elevator doors slid open on an upper floor to reveal a blonde woman in an off-white coat waiting in the private corridor.

He handed the paper bag directly to her, and she took it with a quick word of thanks. But before Jake could step back out to the street, frantic footsteps echoed behind him near the revolving doors.

The woman reached into her purse, turning it inside out with hurried hands. She looked directly at Jake, insisting her wallet had been in her bag just moments before.

The security guard stepped forward, reaching out a hand toward Jake’s insulated delivery pack. Jake pulled the zipper open, pulled back the silver foil lining, and tilted the empty compartment upward for both of them to inspect.

A brief pat down of her own pockets stopped her cold. She paused, admitting she had left her wallet in the car after all.

An Unscheduled Office Meeting

In the quiet hallway by the elevator bank, she lingered beside the courier before he could leave. She looked at his name tag and asked why he spent so many hours on the road.

Jake adjusted his backpack strap and told her that no one else was going to cover his bills. When she asked about his actual dream, he admitted he wanted to run his own restaurant kitchen someday.

A short time later, Jake found himself stepping off an elevator on a high executive floor. He walked into a corner office where an older man in a tailored dark suit sat behind a wide wooden desk, looking out over the Empire State Building.

The man folded his hands and set a thick black binder on the desk surface between them. In bold white letters, the cover read “Restaurant Business Proposal.”

The executive slid the proposal across the polished mahogany, looking Jake straight in the eye. He said he could provide an opportunity, but he would not hand over success.

Turning On the Kitchen Lights

Jake took the binder, turned the pages, and set straight to work. Within weeks, he stood inside an empty storefront with a cloth in his hand, wiping down wooden tables alongside the woman from the tower.

He carried metal food trays across the service line, swept the front entrance, and watched as contractors bolted glowing letters above the front awning: Jake’s Kitchen.

On opening night, every dining table was filled with patrons talking over candlelight. The front glass door swung open, and the older executive walked into the dining room in a sharp suit.

He approached Jake by the main counter, extending his right hand for a firm grip. Tears formed in Jake’s eyes as the older man smiled and pulled him close.

The camera pulls back to the tower rooftop at night, where Jake and the young woman lean against the glass rail, watching searchlights sweep across the illuminated Manhattan skyline.
