An Unnoticed Melody On A Busy Sidewalk
Ethan slid his fingers across the metal guitar strings, sending a gentle acoustic rhythm echoing off the brick storefronts. Commuters in heavy winter coats surged past, their gazes fixed firmly on the concrete beneath their boots.
Behind him, Mark leaned over the counter of his mobile coffee cart, warming his hands around a paper cup. The open black guitar case rested on the flagstones, showing little more than velvet lining and a few stray pennies.
Ethan leaned forward and greeted a passing pedestrian carrying a briefcase. The man shifted his coffee to his other hand, shook his head, and hurried off toward the crosswalk without breaking stride.
Ethan tucked his chin against the collar of his corduroy jacket and kept strumming. The morning sun crept lower down the skyscrapers, yet foot traffic continued to stream by without a pause.
A Quiet Spectator Takes A Seat
The rhythmic click of dog nails tapped against the pavement, stopping inches from the opened case. A golden retriever stood still, tilting its head toward the sound of the acoustic chords.
Ethan bent his knees and lowered himself onto his heels, never taking his hands off the fretboard. The dog pressed its hind legs down, planted its front paws, and stayed seated right in front of the instrument.
Mark set his cup on the wooden counter and peered around the edge of the cart with a wide grin. He pointed down at the golden coat shining in the early light.
The dog drew its nose forward until it almost brushed the edge of the vibrating wooden body. Its tail thumped a slow, rhythmic pattern against the hard sidewalk slabs.
The Sidewalk Stops Moving
Two women walking side by side slowed their pace, their heads turning toward the sitting dog. One tapped the other’s sleeve, pulled a smartphone from her pocket, and angled the camera downward.
Within moments, half a dozen morning commuters formed a semi-circle along the curb. Footsteps that had been marching past now came to a complete halt.
A woman in a mustard knit sweater stepped up to the edge of the instrument case. She reached into her purse, pulled out a bill, and dropped it into the fabric pocket.
More pedestrians pressed forward, clapping to the beat of the song. Paper currency fluttered into the case, landing in thick, overlapping piles until the black fabric bottom disappeared entirely.
Mark stepped away from his cart, laughing as he tapped Ethan on the shoulder and pointed at the mountain of cash. The dog remained centered on the pavement, tongue lolling out as people cheered from the curb.
Sealing A New Bond
The woman in the knit sweater leaned down with her hands on her knees, watching the dog lean its head against Ethan’s shoulder. She asked if he was going to take the dog home.
Ethan unclasped a bright red nylon collar from his pocket and worked the strap beneath the dog’s golden fur. He clicked the plastic buckle shut behind the dog’s neck, resting his palm flat against its broad chest.
The dog turned its head and swiped its tongue along Ethan’s cheek, making him burst into laughter. Ethan rubbed both hands through the thick scruff on Barnaby’s neck while the surrounding crowd clapped beneath the midday sun.
