Stranded on the Concrete Floor
The puppy scraped tiny front paws against the vertical gray concrete wall, slipping backward onto the damp floor of the drainage canal.
A full-grown golden retriever stood along the grassy rim above, dipping its snout low over the edge to nudge the empty air.
Down below, the young dog craned its neck, tail low and twitching as it measured the sheer distance separating them.
The ditch walls rose more than three feet high, forming a smooth barrier with no footholds or shallow slopes.
Behind the puppy, the open mouth of a dark drainage pipe loomed, cutting straight into the dirt embankment.
A Plan Takes Shape
Heavy boot steps rustled the overgrown blades of grass along the canal edge.
A man dressed in a dark jacket approached the trench and bent his knees, placing both palms against his thighs to inspect the drop.
The older retriever stepped aside, pacing near the verge while casting glances between the man and the trapped youngster below.
The man turned toward the lawn behind him, where two weathered rectangular boards lay forgotten in the weeds.
He gripped the edge of the nearest wooden plank with both hands and hoisted it from the grass.
Building a Way Out
He carried the heavy piece of timber toward the concrete rim, shifting his grip along the splintered edges.
Lowering the bottom edge first, he guided the wood down until it rested firmly against the concrete floor of the trench.
He leaned the upper end securely against the top lip of the grass, creating a steady wooden bridge at an angle.
The puppy backed up a couple of inches, blinking up at the sudden wooden structure resting inches away from its paws.
The man stepped several paces back into the grass, clearing the area so the animals had room to move freely.
Taking the First Step
The puppy took one small forward step, extending a single paw onto the rough grain of the board.
Finding solid traction underfoot, the little dog planted all four paws onto the incline and began scrambling upward.
The retriever moved closer to the top landing, ears perked and tail sweeping broad strokes across the grass.
With a final push of its hind legs, the small dog crested the edge and cleared the trench.
The puppy buried its snout directly against the older dog’s neck, wagging its tail furiously as both animals rubbed against each other in the tall green blades.
