Two Travelers Spot Red Panda Trapped Along A Muddy Path

  • 3 min read

A Wet Nose Pressed Against Wet Wood

The small red panda wedged its muzzle tightly between two vertical pickets of a dark wooden fence. Wet fur clustered around its ears while high-pitched squeaks cut through the damp air. Just a few feet back, another red panda paced in the background, peering nervously through the fence slats.

The animal tried pulling its skull backward, but the base of its ears caught hard against the rough lumber. Mud coated its tiny front paws as it struggled against the rain-soaked barrier. Every small twitch produced a frantic squeak that echoed along the misty roadside.

A green truck rattled to a halt along the edge of the drenched trail. Two figures stepped down into the mud, their boots sinking softly into the grey sludge.

Hands on the Wet Rails

The man in the plaid flannel jacket walked to the edge of the fence, gripping the top railing with both gloved hands. A woman in a grey coat and rubber boots dropped into a deep crouch beside the trapped animal.

The animal shifted its dark eyes toward her kneeling form, ceasing its cries for a single breath. The man braced his boots against the slick path and pulled upward on the timber to relieve the pressure on the animal’s neck. Wood creaked under the strain, opening only a tiny fraction of an inch of clearance.

The woman reached out with both hands, sliding her dark gloves carefully along the animal’s flank and chin. She did not force the head straight back; instead, she gently tested the angle of the thick wooden pickets.

The red panda pressed its white whiskers flat against the wet plank as she guided its snout. Her fingers worked quietly, shifting one ear beneath the wood grain before repositioning the other side. With the man holding the wooden rail firm, she nudged the animal forward toward the wide gap underneath.

Stepping Out of the Gap

The thick fur of its head popped clear of the wooden slats with a soft rustle. The red panda dropped its front paws flat onto the muddy ground, shaking damp droplets from its whiskers.

It paused for a brief second on the wet dirt road, staring directly at the woman’s rubber boots. Its bushy, ringed tail swept slowly across the puddles, thick and rust-colored against the grey soil. A soft voice murmured encouragingly as the animal gathered its balance.

The second red panda peeked from the edge of the tall bamboo stalks, watching its companion step forward. With a quick hop, the freed panda turned its back on the road and hurried toward the thick green cover.

Both red pandas slipped into the dense bamboo thicket, their reddish-brown coats vanishing into the green stalks and grey mist.
