Mother Weasel Trapped On Fence Fights To Protect Her Crying Babies

  • 3 min read

Caught in the Wire

The small brown weasel clamped its teeth around a rusty strand of barbed wire and twisted violently in the wet mud.

Its rear paw remained wedged tight between two rusted barbs pinned low against the fence line.

A few inches away, two tiny kits huddled together in a wet clump of grass, shivering as rain soaked their fur.

The mother let out piercing shrieks each time she jerked her body backward, kicking up dirt and leaves.

Every lunge only twisted the sharp metal deeper against her foot.

Her mouth remained open, flashing needle-thin teeth at anything that moved nearby.

Heavy work boots stopped in the damp earth beside the fence post.

A Careful Approach

A man knelt down in the mud, pulling a pair of red-handled wire snips from his jacket.

His knees sank into the sodden grass alongside the fence.

The mother hissed, arching her slender neck and snapping her jaws toward his bare hands.

He paused his hand mid-air, keeping his fingers flat and out of range of her teeth.

The two babies pressed their snouts into each other’s flanks, chirping weakly in the damp air.

Rain dripped from the brim of his collar as he leaned closer to examine the tangle.

The barbed wire was wrapped tightly around the paw, pressing the flesh right against the steel knot.

One wrong cut could pinch the animal’s limb or cause the springy line to snap back into her face.

Working the Pliers

He gripped the rusty wire with his left thumb and forefinger to stabilize it against the ground.

The weasel rolled onto her back, snapping repeatedly at the metal jaws of the cutter.

He slide the cutting edge between the barb points, working millimeters away from her pads.

He squeezed the handles slowly until the rusted metal gave a sharp, dull click.

The mother pulled hard, but the knot still held a corner of her toes captive.

Keeping his breath steady, he repositioned the tool and snipped the second loop of wire.

The tension collapsed instantly.

The animal dropped her head to the mud, remaining motionless for several long seconds on her side.

Rejoining the Kits

The man rested his hand on his knee, watching her chest rise and fall against the wet soil.

She rolled onto her belly, shaking her back legs to clear the mud from her claws.

She scrambled across the few inches of wet dirt directly toward the green tuft of grass.

She pushed her nose into the ball of shivering young, nudging each one upward with quick prods of her snout.

The two kits scrambled under her belly, chirping as she nudged them forward into the field.

The three brown shapes darted together across the sodden grass and disappeared deep into the thick briar patch.
