Businessman Meets Old Friend Working As Valet Outside High-Stakes Dinner

  • 3 min read

An Unexpected Reunion

The car key dropped straight into the palm of the parking attendant. The driver paused mid-stride, his eyes widening as he read the employee name tag.

Dave stood holding the electronic fob in his fluorescent yellow vest. Ten years had passed since the two men had stood in the same room.

Before either could finish speaking, a woman in an ivory blazer stepped up from the curb. Her hand reached out and gripped the businessman’s tailored sleeve, pulling him toward the entrance.

Reporters were already milling by the indoor cocktail lounge. Board members were seated inside awaiting an essential dinner meeting.

The executive ignored the tug on his arm and stepped forward to wrap both arms around the valet. The two men gripped each other by the shoulders on the hotel driveway.

Tension on the Curb

A hotel supervisor strode down the exterior stairs with his coat flapping open. He pointed an arm toward a row of waiting vehicles and shouted directly at Dave to move them immediately.

Dave stepped back toward the driver side of the black sports car and reached out for the key. The executive intercepted the key fob and placed it into the supervisor’s open palm.

He told the manager that Dave was off the clock. The manager climbed into the car and drove it down the ramp himself.

The woman pulled the executive away from the driveway to whisper sharply. She warned that the dinner table was booked and that her parents had arrived that morning.

She demanded to know why a valet parking cars outside mattered more than the partners waiting inside. The man replied that Dave had kept him fed when he had nothing to eat.

She gave him an ultimatum, stating that if Dave joined them inside, she would leave immediately. The executive remained quiet and did not move toward the lobby doors.

She turned on her heel, signaled a passing yellow cab, climbed into the back seat, and shut the door behind her.

The Past Remembered

The supervisor walked back down the ramp and demanded Dave turn over his uniform vest. Dave reached up and pulled the lanyard off his neck, staring at the plastic badge in his fingers.

He explained that his mother’s care facility fees had jumped by two hundred dollars that month. His wife’s work hours had just been cut to twenty-four a week.

The executive stepped between them and stated that his logistics department needed an operations supervisor starting the next morning. Dave shook his head, admitting he did not know how to operate inventory software.

The businessman asked if he could count boxes and track equipment logs for athletic programs. He stated that Dave had supported him through six months of homelessness a decade prior without asking a single question.

Dave pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes and wiped his face with his sleeve. The executive extended his right hand and held it out firmly until Dave grasped it.

Stepping Inside

The supervisor stood near the curb and asked if Dave was returning to finish his shift. The executive shook his head and replied that Dave was coming with him.

Dave unzipped the fluorescent safety vest and folded it twice. He placed the neon cloth neatly onto the brass valet stand beside the entrance.

The executive rested one hand on Dave’s leather jacket and pushed the revolving glass doors open, guiding him directly into the hotel lobby.
