Cornered Against The Steel Sluice
The young tapir pressed its snout against the rusted metal gate, its hooves sinking into the murky swamp water. Behind it, armored scales cut silently through the lily pads, gliding forward millimeter by millimeter. The reptile kept its yellow eyes locked on the cornered calf, closing the remaining yards of open water.
With vertical walls flanking both sides and solid steel blocking the canal outlet, the young mammal had nowhere left to turn. It shifted its weight from side to side, ears twitching backward toward the approaching wake. The water rippled in steady concentric rings as the predator’s snout surfaced fully.
Help Arrives On The High Walkway
Heavy footsteps clattered along the metal catwalk directly overhead. Two wildlife rangers in green uniforms leaned over the guardrail, taking in the scene below. One reached for the radio pinned to his shoulder strap while the other immediately gripped the heavy iron handwheel mounted to the gate mechanism.
The ranger braced his boots against the concrete platform and pulled downward on the iron spokes. The wheel turned with a sharp metallic clack, sending vibrations down the steel support pillars. Slowly, the heavy gate began to inch upward out of the silt, creaking against its vertical tracks.
Below, the opening revealed a narrow, muddy passage leading out of the canal toward higher ground. The calf glanced upward toward the sound of grinding metal, its nostrils flaring as water splashed against the rising iron edge.
A Narrow Dash For The Shoreline
The reptile recognized the shifting current and surged forward, its powerful tail thrashing the muddy water into white froth. At the very same moment, the tapir lunged straight into the widening gap beneath the raised gate.
The calf drove its legs into the soft bank, churning up mud and water weed as it scrambled upward. Behind it, the alligator’s jaws snapped shut on empty water right at the threshold of the concrete frame. The massive reptile slid forward into the shallow vegetation, unable to match the mammal’s sudden burst of speed across the muddy slope.
The young tapir pulled its body entirely out of the water, shaking dark swamp silt from its flanks as it reached the solid grass line. Its strides lengthened, carrying it quickly past the concrete abutments and onto dry terrain.
Disappearing Into The Sunset
The calf trotted steadily along the grassy canal bank, moving toward the line of distant brush and palm trees. Behind it, the alligator rested motionless among the floating water hyacinths, its dark head half-submerged in the shallow current.
Up on the metal bridge, the two rangers released the wheel and stood shoulder to shoulder against the railing. They kept their eyes fixed on the young animal as it walked into the golden evening light along the edge of the wetlands.
