Turned Away at the Door
Black rubber boots stepped along slick cobblestones as an elderly woman walked through the rain, clutching worn cloth bags against her heavy leather coat. She paused under the glow of street lamps, her breath visible in the damp evening air.
Pushing open the heavy glass doors of a grand dining hall, she stepped into the bright warmth. Crystal chandeliers cast light across polished marble floors, where patrons sat in tailored suits and silk evening gowns.
A security guard crossed the room with long strides. He placed a hand firmly on her shoulder, turned her toward the entrance, and guided her back into the rain.
An Unexpected Greeting on the Cobblestones
The glass doors swung shut behind her. The elderly woman slumped against the wet stone wall outside, pulling her knees up as water dripped from the brim of her headscarf.
White silk lifted slightly above the damp street as a bride walked out into the rain carrying a wide black umbrella. The bride slowed her pace and stopped directly in front of the seated woman.
She lowered the umbrella to shield both of them from the downpour. Crouching on the wet stones, the young woman rested a hand gently against the older woman’s worn sleeve.
Reentering Through the Grand Doors
The bride stood and offered her arm. The older woman took it, leaning her weight against the lace sleeve as they walked side by side back down the alley.
Together, they entered the dining hall under the wide glass entryway. The hostess stepped aside at the podium, lowering his hands as the bride guided the older woman past the front desk.
The pair walked through the central aisle between linen-draped tables. Several patrons paused their conversations, watching the wet coat brush against white silk lace.
A Place at the Feast
The bride pulled out a booth seat upholstered in deep red velvet. The elderly woman removed her wet outer coat and sat down in a knitted green cardigan.
Waiters placed silver platters across the white tablecloth. Carved roast meat, fresh seafood towers, and bowls of fruit filled the space between their crystal glasses.
The older woman picked up a fork and knife, her shoulders bouncing in laughter as the bride leaned forward across the table with a wide smile.
