Standing By The Road
A golden retriever planted his four paws into the deep powder and barked sharply toward the street.
Puffs of white steam rose from his open mouth with every howl. Across the road, a dark patrol vehicle slowed its tires over the icy ridges and came to a stop beside the snowbank.
The dog did not retreat. He shifted his weight from side to side, keeping his amber eyes fixed on the windshield as the blue and red lights reflected across the snowy lawn.
Both vehicle doors clicked open against the cold wind. Two officers stepped out into the storm, their heavy boots sinking into the slush as they turned their attention toward the barking animal.
The moment the dog saw both officers emerge, he spun around, trotted forward a few paces, and looked back over his shoulder to confirm they were following.
The Path Through The Snow
The retriever broke into a steady sprint toward the private driveway, his tail cutting through the air. The two officers moved into a jog behind him, their boots creating deep impressions in the freshly fallen snow.
They kept their pace steady, tracking the dog’s path past the curbside mailbox and up the long front walkway. Snowflakes caught on the shoulders of their black jackets as they matched the canine’s course.
The dog never lost focus on the front entrance of the house. He reached the lower steps of the covered porch and planted himself firmly on the ice, whining softly while pointing his snout directly at the doorway.
The officers rounded the corner of the hedges a moment later, their eyes following the dog’s gaze to the base of the front door.
A Critical Discovery
Slumped on the cold concrete stoop sat a young woman in lightweight athletic clothes. Her legs were stretched straight across the icy threshold, and fine white crystals dusted her dark hair.
Her shoulders trembled slightly under her maroon jacket, her head leaning weakly back against the black wooden frame. She struggled to push herself upright as the cold ground pulled the warmth from her body.
Both officers dropped to their knees in the snow beside her. One officer extended a gloved hand to support her shoulder, while the second officer knelt close to ask quiet questions and monitor her breathing.
The golden retriever leaned his entire upper body against her side. He nudged her arm with his nose, resting his chin right near her shoulder as the officers worked.
One of the responders reached into a gear pack and unfolded a silver foil emergency blanket. Together, they wrapped the crinkling metallic sheet around her torso and shoulders, tucking the edges tight to trap every bit of body heat.
Safe Inside The Doorway
The officers helped the shivering resident move across the threshold, easing her onto the dry patterned rug just inside the entrance hall. The warm air of the house shielded her from the wind as she sat upright with her back against the doorframe.
The golden retriever walked through the door and immediately pressed his chest against her knee. He sat still, lifting a front paw to touch her arm.
The woman wrapped both arms tightly around the dog’s neck, burying her face into his thick golden fur and closing her eyes as the officers stood watch just beyond the open doorway.
